The Intercollegiate Athletics Department sponsors 30 varsity sports programs with a budget of approximately $200 million annually. The Athletics Chief Financial Officer (Athletics CFO) reports to the Vice Chancellor of Finance (VCF‑CFO) and to the Co‑Athletic Directors.
Position OverviewThe Athletics CFO provides financial leadership, oversees departmental functions, and serves as a C‑suite liaison to campus partners and the Athletics Cabinet.
Responsibilities- Lead development and oversight of the Athletics financial sustainability plan and strategic multi‑year outlook, including executive‑level reports, sport‑specific budgets, fundraising tracking, and forecasting.
- Maintain the integrity of the organization’s budget, forecast, reporting, and tracking systems; supervise budget and fiscal staff; act as chief budget liaison for resource allocations and in‑year budget management of all funds.
- Analyze organization‑wide funding issues and budget processes; develop ad‑hoc analysis on gifts, capital projects, and endowment performance.
- Engage senior management and executive levels on functional and customer matters; develop and deliver regular budget presentations and materials.
- Manage the Business and Finance unit within Athletics, including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Financial Data Analytics, Procurement, Budgeting, Reporting, Forecasting, and Planning and Analysis.
- Develop, modify, and execute internal controls to protect university resources and establish appropriate accountability structures.
- Perform analysis for funding issues and resource allocation models; track gifts and endowment impacts on Intercollegiate Athletics.
- Collaborate with senior executives on financial strategy, presenting findings to coaches, administrators, and staff.
- Oversee the Business and Finance unit, ensuring effective financial operations for Athletics teams.
- Maintain robust internal controls and compliance with university financial policies.
- Working knowledge of accounting principles, including profit and loss statements and balance sheets.
- Public finance expertise and strong skills in budgeting, reporting, fund accounting, human resources planning, payroll analysis, and accounting.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex concepts to multiple audiences.
- Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills; ability to work effectively across the organization and represent multiple stakeholder groups.
- Proven track record of managing staff and leading units to achieve measurable goals.
- Client‑services orientation; strong listening, critical thinking, and analytical skills.
- Ability to multitask, prioritize, and maintain a high level of autonomy.
- Advanced knowledge of accounting and financial management in complex, decentralized organizations.
- Proficiency with relevant office and accounting software.
- Undergraduate degree in a related field.
- Current knowledge of NCAA rules and related standards to avoid violations.
- Public finance experience, preferably in higher education and/or NCAA athletics.
- Advanced degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience.
- Expertise in accounting and financial management at a complex organizational level.
- Deep knowledge of intercollegiate athletics operations, compliance, and revenue streams.
- Experience or knowledge of sports media and revenue generation.
Salary range: $215,000 – $265,000. Full job classification range: $138,200 – $271,200. Additional benefits include paid professional development, standard UC Berkeley employment benefits, and other campus resources.
