Departmental Overview

Facilities Services works to continuously improve the campus in partnership with all members of the University community to ensure that classrooms, laboratories, and offices support teaching, learning and research. Through the efforts of over 400 dedicated staff members and serving over 10M building square feet and 1100 acres, Facilities Services includes the asset management program, custodial services, maintenance operations, engineering and technical services, environmental services, grounds operations, the Cal Zero Waste program, the Campus Building Department, and the campus utility systems, including the cogeneration plant.

The scope of the Facilities Services reaches across campus and is closely connected to the activities of staff, building managers, other campus departments, and campus leadership.

Position Summary

The Assistant Director of Custodial Services manages the daily activities of the Custodial Services work unit, which includes a group of diverse employees consisting of Supervisors, Lead Custodians, and Custodians. As a member of the Facilities Operation, the Custodial Operations Manager indirectly manages a team of 250 employees and is responsible for overseeing all phases of cleaning and event support provided by the custodial Services Department to assigned areas of the campus.

This manager leads supervisors to accomplish the Facilities Mission.

Will be responsible for the overall cleanliness, sanitation, and security of the unit-managed buildings. Must also have the ability to supervise, direct, and develop supervisors and hourly employees in accordance with guidelines, and to ensure customer satisfaction through high-quality standards, while maintaining an environment that is safe and equitable.

Responsible for assigning duties, inspecting work, investigating complaints regarding services, and taking immediate corrective action. Will help develop SOPs to secure and assure that all equipment is maintained and in working order. They will also make sure buildings have sufficient supplies by taking periodic inventories of supplies and materials. Will train, discipline, and recommend reassigning employees. Act as a liaison between building occupants or administrators and supervisors, so it is imperative that you are able to effectively communicate all directives from managers, building occupants, and administrators.

  • Ensures proper handling and mixture of chemicals by custodial/housekeeping staff.
