Departmental Overview

Facilities Services works to continuously improve the campus in partnership with all members of the University community to ensure that classrooms, laboratories, and offices support teaching, learning and research. Facilities Services includes custodial services, maintenance operations, engineering and technical services, environmental services, grounds operations, the Cal Zero Waste program, and campus utility systems.

Position Summary

The Assistant Director of Custodial Services manages the daily activities of the Custodial Services work unit, overseeing all phases of cleaning and event support to assigned campus areas. This manager leads supervisors to accomplish the Facilities Mission, ensuring overall cleanliness, sanitation, and security of unit‑managed buildings while supervising, developing, and directing supervisors and hourly employees.

Responsibilities
  • Manages the daily activities of custodial employees.
  • Implements department programs and ensures department goals and objectives are achieved.
  • Performs daily inspections and follows through on assignments to ensure task completion.
  • Plans, organizes and directs routine custodial operations.
  • Recommends innovative approaches to service delivery.
  • Trains and supervises custodial/housekeeping supervisors on standards of cleanliness, sanitation, and safety.
  • Communicates between various shifts to ensure applicable completion of tasks.
  • Conducts ongoing safety training to ensure staff competency using custodial equipment and supplies.
  • Conducts staff training and ensures adherence to custodial and housekeeping policies and procedures.
  • Ensures safe handling and disposal of hazardous and biohazardous waste.
  • Ensures proper handling and mixture of chemicals by custodial/housekeeping staff.
  • Develops and manages supply and equipment expense budget.
  • Maintains department inventory and purchases supplies and equipment.
  • Responsible for recruitment, staff development, performance management/evaluation, corrective action, training, staff competency, and retention.
  • Guides completion of projects to make sure they are completed timely and within budget.
  • Prepares custodial schedules to provide optimal staff coverage based on operational needs.
Required Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of custodial and housekeeping services including knowledge of codes and policies governing biohazardous and/or hazardous waste.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills with the ability to present information to diverse audiences.
  • Proven analytical and problem‑solving skills with the ability to identify and implement effective solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to build effective working relationships with senior management and staff.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of fiscal management including budget development.
  • Ability to implement process improvement strategies and quality initiatives.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of human resources management and staff development.
  • Ability to manage staff with a variety of skills.
  • Bloodborne pathogen and sharps disposal training.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
