Position description

Postdoctoral Scholar – Environmental Streamflow Modeling – ESPM (Ecosystem Sciences) – Grantham Lab. The department of ESPM at UC Berkeley seeks a Postdoctoral Scholar to lead the development of statewide hydrologic models to predict seasonal flow dynamics in California streams.

Position Duties

Under the mentorship of the PI, the candidate will compile datasets, develop a hydrologic modeling approach to predict natural streamflow, evaluate model uncertainty, and build reproducible and transparent modeling frameworks. The candidate will lead preparation of peer‑reviewed manuscripts and have opportunities to pursue independent research. The candidate will interact extensively with project partners in the California Environmental Flows Framework and be based at UC Berkeley in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management, with opportunities to collaborate with researchers at the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Center for Data Science and the Environment.

Specific

responsibilities
  • Collate, clean, and assimilate data from publicly available sources
  • Design, execute, and implement streamflow models for California rivers
  • Evaluate model prediction performance and uncertainty
  • Generate streamflow predictions for rivers
  • Develop robust and transparent modeling framework and data pipelines
  • Participate in regular research team meetings, remote and in‑person
  • Present results at regional, national, and international conferences
  • Prepare at least one manuscript for submission to a peer‑reviewed journal

Qualifications

Basic qualifications:

Ph.D. or equivalent, or enrollment in a Ph.D. program.

Additional qualifications:

Ph.D. required by appointment start date; no more than three years of post‑degree research experience by start date.

Preferred qualifications:

background in stream hydrology, hydrologic modeling, data analytics, machine learning; strong data management; interest in open‑source software; expertise in environmental flow science; excellent communication and collaboration; strong publication record; compassionate, professional, reliable team player; effective communication and diplomacy.
