The Department of Molecular and Cell Biology (MCB) focuses on the molecular structures and processes of cellular life and their roles in the function, reproduction, and development of organisms. The department covers biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, structural biology, genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, cell biology, developmental biology, tumor biology, microbiology, immunology, pathogenesis, and neurobiology.
Position SummaryResearch in the lab focuses on the innate immune system, using in vitro systems and mouse models to examine gene family functions. The Staff Research Associate manages mouse colony operations and supports postdocs and graduate students with experimental design, scheduling, and execution.
Responsibilities- Manage mouse colony operations: breeding setups, imports/exports, euthanizing mice, maintaining animal welfare compliance, coordinating with veterinary staff, and keeping detailed census records.
- Assist lab members with animal procedures and experimental procedures, including design, planning, scheduling, and execution.
- Validate potential antigens via mass spectrometry and track inflammatory responses in mouse models.
- Isolate DNA from tissues, perform PCRs to determine genotypes.
- Wean, tag, and cage mice; update census daily.
- Recruit, orient, train, schedule, and supervise undergraduate work study students.
- Express and purify recombinant proteins in
E. coli; perform ELISAs and immunological assays. - Analyze immune cell populations by flow cytometry; conduct necropsy and analysis.
- Plan, schedule, and coordinate large experiments with postdocs and graduate students.
- Experience with DNA isolation and PCR.
- Proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, and Google Docs.
- Strong organizational skills and motivation.
- Willingness to learn new techniques and skills.
- Good interpersonal skills for group environments.
- Experience with mice, viral and bacterial preparations, and recombinant proteins.
- Ability to work on feet for extended periods.
- Experience with standard molecular biology and biochemistry protocols.
- Experience with mouse handling and manipulation.
- Bachelor's degree in biomedical or health sciences or related area.
Salary range: $27.85k – $31.04k (Step 1 – Step
6). Non‑exempt, biweekly‑paid position.
