Associate/Full Specialist – Fuels & Fire Ecology – YLESP Position Overview

Title: Associate Specialist or Specialist (Shive Lab)

Department: Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management, University of California, Berkeley

Salary Range: The minimum pay is determined by UC academic salary scales. Estimated full‑time salary: $75,600–$93,200.

Percent Time: 100%

Start: Winter 2025‑26

Duration: One year, with possible extension based on performance and additional grants.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the PI to gather research on delayed tree mortality, draft extension materials (fact sheets, research briefs, webinars, workshops), and coordinate with experts for feedback.
  • Survey literature and existing extension materials to evaluate needs around fuels treatment monitoring. Lead a needs assessment survey for practitioners and coordinate field visits to evaluate how needs vary across California ecosystems. Develop a plan for new extension materials that meet practitioners' needs.
  • Assist with ongoing and new research projects; provide logistical support, analyze field data, enter and organize large datasets, conduct spatial analyses, and support fieldwork as needed. Primarily an office‑based position.
Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application): Master’s degree or equivalent international degree.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start): 3 years of post‑degree relevant research experience.

Preferred qualifications
  • Master's Degree in ecology, ecosystem science, forestry, geography, plant sciences, or a related field.
  • Strong R programming and GIS skills.
  • Robust experience in project management and implementing forest inventory fieldwork.
  • Research experience in forest ecosystem management and/or science.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and collaborate efficiently.
  • Experience translating science for practitioners in creating extension and outreach materials.
