Working under the general direction of, and reporting to, the Lead Hazards Analyst, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) Security & Emergency Services (SES) Division is seeking a Hazards Analyst to assist in the implementation of analytical requirements and contribute to deliverables within the Emergency Management, Safeguards & Security, and Fire Protection Programs.

As a Hazards Analyst, you’ll serve as a technical specialist supporting one of the world’s leading research institutions.

Working at the intersection of science, safety, and operations, you’ll identify and assess a wide range of natural, technological, and human-caused hazards that could affect laboratory operations—with a particular focus on hazardous materials (biological, chemical, and radiological). You’ll draw on principles from engineering, atmospheric science, chemistry, toxicology, industrial hygiene, and public health to evaluate potential risks and develop assessments that inform emergency preparedness and response strategies.

Your work is critical to ensuring the safety of employees, research, and the surrounding community from potential threats and emergency conditions.

Responsibilities
  • Translate and implement requirements from DOE Order 151.1E and DOE Order 470.3C to support the development and maintenance of technical reports, programmatic plans, and analytical deliverables
  • Identify natural, technological, and human-caused hazards and characterize their potential impacts to the laboratory
  • Screen and assess hazardous material inventories (biological, chemical, and radiological) against the DOE emergency management and security requirements
  • Support security asset identification and characterization essential to the completion of security planning documents
  • Apply dispersion modeling to analyze onsite and offsite consequences of actual or potential hazardous material releases
  • Use Geographical Information Systems (GIS), wildfire spread modeling, explosion modeling, and other software solutions to assist in hazards assessment and response activities
  • Collaborate with emergency planners, fire protection engineers, security professionals, and research staff to support research and maintain consistency across programs
  • Serve as a member of the Emergency Response Organization (ERO) in an assigned on-duty/on-call rotation as a specialist in emergency identification, categorization, and consequence assessment, with the potential for 24/7/365 recall including potential assignments during nights, weekends, and holidays whenever such emergency events occur
  • Perform additional related duties as needed
Requirements
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience; OR a Bachelor of Science degree in an appropriate engineering or applied science discipline from a college or university; OR an equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience for Level 2
  • An understanding of the basic chemical and physical properties of hazardous materials (biological, chemical, and radiological)
  • California Driver’s License
  • Ability to review, interpret, and apply requirements
  • Basic knowledge of mathematical formulas, computations, and data analysis
  • Demonstrated skills in technical writing or research-based writing
  • Ability to interpret and implement policies and procedures as well as produce professional technical reports, plans, briefs, and other well written documents
  • The ability to multi-task to produce results in a fast-paced changing environment involving competing priorities and deadlines
  • Be able to serve in an assigned on-duty/on-call position in the Emergency Response Organization (ERO), with the potential for 24/7/365 recall and assignment on extended hours or during nights, weekends, and holidays; whenever such events occur
