Departmental Overview

Residential and Student Service Programs (RSSP) is part of the Division of Student Affairs. RSSP provides student housing, residential life programs, self-operated dining services for students and families, child care services, a year-round conference program, campus restaurants, and faculty apartments. The Central Maintenance, Design, and Minor Capital Projects units provide a range of trades and related maintenance services, interior design, space planning, renovation project management, major/minor capital planning, and project management for RSSP.

Position Summary

Plumber-pipe fitters install or repair water, gas, waste or other types of pipe and pipe fittings, valves, fixtures and related plumbing equipment; lay out work; measure to locate positions of pipe from drawings or written specifications; cut, thread, bend, assemble and fasten pipe; make computations relating to pressure, flow, and size of pipe required; test to determine whether finished pipe meets specifications;

keep plumbing systems in good working order.

Responsibilities

  • Installation, alteration, maintenance, and repair of plumbing systems, fittings, and fixtures on campus and RSSP buildings and facilities.
  • Understand and plan methods and procedures required to complete installation and repair work on piping systems, including underground and high-rise buildings.
  • Prepare isometric drawings in detail showing measurements and materials from blueprints and verbal instructions.
  • Fabricate a wide variety of campus piping systems and related components.
  • Install and repair campus plumbing systems including gas lines, domestic water heating, sewer, vent, acid-waste, water lines, backflow prevention, and related components.
  • Demonstrate the ability to join similar and dissimilar metals using proper methods, techniques and materials.
  • Maintain good communication with management, campus community, including students, building managers, academic personnel, and craft personnel in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Complete job assignments in a timely manner.
  • Work from drawings or prepare project drawings in detail showing measurements and materials, using building blueprints and verbal instructions.
  • Perform planned and emergency maintenance, inspections, test operations, troubleshooting, and documentation of work performed.
  • Be available to respond to emergencies, work on-call, rotating swing shift and holidays.
  • Work is subject to inspection during progress and upon completion.
  • Safely handle hazardous waste, properly contain and label materials, and follow appropriate emergency procedures as they relate to hazardous waste materials.
  • Follow EH&S health and safety policies, OSHA and other applicable requirements, RSSP policies and procedures, and UC policies, including Code of Conduct and Safety programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • General pipe fitting with use of hand tools, brazing, copper work, soldering, threading and joining joints with variety of methods.
  • Applied knowledge of system operations.
  • Ability to read isometric drawings and fabricate/install piping accordingly.
