Department Overview

The Residential and Student Service Programs (RSSP) is part of the Division of Student Affairs. RSSP provides student housing, residential life programs, dining services, childcare, conference business, campus restaurants, and faculty apartments. The Central Maintenance, Design, and Minor Capital Projects units deliver building trades, interior design, space planning, renovation, and maintenance services to RSSP.

Position Summary

The Steamfitter maintains, repairs, and replaces a wide range of HVAC, refrigeration, boiler, and steam distribution systems that support RSSP facilities. Working independently under general supervision, the role diagnoses system issues, performs preventive and emergency maintenance, prepares and interprets drawings, documents work, and ensures all tasks follow campus safety and compliance standards. The position collaborates with project managers, inspectors, and other trades;

responds to service requests and on‑call emergencies; and may assist with coordinating work or providing direction to other staff. This role requires strong technical expertise, effective communication, and the ability to work safely in varied and physically demanding environments.

Responsibilities UNDER SUPERVISION
  • Work independently to maintain, repair, and replace chillers, cooling towers, HVAC and refrigeration systems, boilers, humidifiers, and related equipment.
  • Repair or replace steam lines, traps, condensate return systems, radiators, heating coils, and other equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair heat exchangers, pressure reducing valves, and temperature control systems.
  • Perform maintenance on chillers and boilers.
  • Participate in design or specification of assemblies, systems, equipment, and controls.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot all types of refrigeration equipment.
  • Work from drawings or prepare detailed project drawings.
  • Conduct planned and emergency maintenance, inspections, tests, and documentation.
  • Be available for emergencies, on‑call, rotating swing shifts, and holidays.
  • Communicate effectively with students, building managers, academic personnel, and craft personnel in a multicultural environment.
  • Adhere to work orders and safety inspections.
  • Maintain accurate time and material records, order supplies, coordinate other crafts, and serve as interim lead when required.
  • Handle hazardous waste safely and in compliance with emergency procedures.
  • Perform basic mathematical calculations related to projects.
  • Carry out all work in compliance with EH&S, OSHA, federal, state, local, RSSP, and UC policies.
ADMINISTRATIVE/ TECHNICAL
  • Coordinate with project managers, building inspectors, and facility managers.
  • Maintain accurate project records, including plans, specifications, submittals, schedules, and costs.
  • Consult with supervisors or project managers on standards and requirements.
  • Support maintenance projects and work assignments.
  • Track job status and projected completion schedules.
  • Prioritize work to meet customer needs.
  • Complete daily logs and paperwork promptly.
  • Interpret equipment manuals, blueprints, state and local codes, and trade-specific manuals.
  • Describe materials, tools, equipment, and task sequences.
  • Serve as liaison with clients, relaying their needs to appropriate departments.
  • Support shutdowns and project schedules to minimize disruption.
  • Procure and order materials and equipment, maintain records.
  • Communicate clearly via telephone and two‑way radio.
  • Attend safety, technical, and general meetings.
