At Boeing, we innovate and collaborate to make the world a better place. We’re committed to fostering an environment for every teammate that’s welcoming, respectful and inclusive, with great opportunity for professional growth. Find your future with us.

The Boeing Company is looking for a Wind Tunnel Instrumentation & Controls Engineer to join our team in Berkeley, MO. The Instrumentation Engineer is a specialized role within the Aero Test capability under Boeing Test and Evaluation. The Aero Test capability supports wind tunnel tests for all Boeing divisions, including Boeing Commercial Aircraft, Boeing Defense Systems, and Boeing Space programs at Boeing wind tunnels and external facilities.

The Instrumentation Engineer works in a small integrated team of engineers and technicians which support the Polysonic Wind Tunnel (PSWT) located in Berkeley, MO. The Polysonic Wind Tunnel is a blowdown wind tunnel with a test section size of 4 ft × 4 ft and has a Mach number range of 0.45 to 5.3.

Instrumentation Engineer responsibilities include data acquisition systems, various wind tunnel control systems, wind tunnel and wind tunnel model instrumentation, and documentation of processes and procedures related to the aforementioned. An Instrumentation Engineer is assigned to each wind tunnel test effort. They will collaborate with the lead test engineer, operations team, and program partners to ensure the wind tunnel test produces the highest quality data that meets the requirements of the business partner.

In addition, the Instrumentation Engineer will also support external wind tunnel needs, which will occasionally require travel.

A wide variety of hardware is used in the wind tunnel, and most systems are Windows‑based PCs with National Instruments front ends along with many Siemens and Allen‑Bradley Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs). The control systems are generally LabVIEW‑based or ladder‑logic software. Other programming languages used are C++, MATLAB and Wonder Ware Intouch.

Position Responsibilities

  • Work on a wide variety of data/control systems that span many engineering curricula, electrical, mechanical, aerodynamic, and computer
  • Develop and document standardized test methods and processes to ensure repeatability and productivity
  • Develop detailed test procedures, instrumentation and configuration definitions needed to perform the test and minimize risk within the constraints of the test plan
  • Develop solutions to calibration system problems of limited scope and impact
  • Design test hardware, software and systems to achieve test requirements
  • Use analytical tools to verify the design
  • Analyze, process, and format data to customer requirements
