2 Post-Doctoral Positions in Monetary Economics

Join the Department of Economics at the University of Bern International as one of two post‑doctoral researchers focusing on monetary economics.

Start of employment: 01.08.2026 or by mutual agreement. Duration:
Up to five years.

These positions are funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) with two grants:

  • Starting Grant on "Financial Stability in an Era of Digital Currencies" led by Professor Lukas Altermatt.
  • Grant on "The Next‑Generation Monetary System:
    Institutional Design of Interoperable and Programmable CBDCs" led by Professor Cyril Monnet.
Project Description and Tasks

The goal of the project is to study the structure and the stability of the future digital financial system. Candidates will work independently on projects in this area and contribute to developing and calibrating models with the project leaders.

Requirements
  • PhD in Economics or Finance, with a focus on Monetary Economics, Macroeconomics, Financial Intermediation, or a related field, by the time of the appointment or shortly thereafter.
  • Strong expertise in theoretical modeling and programming.
  • Expertise in quantitative analysis and in handling empirical data is desirable.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Strong potential to conduct high‑quality research, as evidenced by publications or working papers suitable for publication in leading journals.
