Job Description & How to Apply Below

Your task

We are looking for an ambitious postdoctoral researcher to develop dual-comb spectroscopy for atmospheric sensing and climate research. The position is hosted by the Division of Laser Physics in close collaboration with scientists from Isotope Biogeoscience, Cloud Dynamics, and Atmospheric Dynamics. The project aims to build a broadband, high-resolution optical sensing platform for isotope-resolved measurements of greenhouse gases and other trace gases, including trials towards a unique optical sensing link between Zimmerwald Observatory and the Jungfraujoch High Altitude Research Station at 3,500 metres above sea level in the Swiss Alps.

  • Define the sensing strategy in close exchange with all collaborators
  • Build a dual-comb spectroscopy prototype using state-of-the-art infrastructure
  • Validate and benchmark the system in the laboratory using calibrated gas samples
  • Plan first open-path field tests and analyse the results together with collaborators.
Your profile
  • PhD in physics, photonics, optical engineering, atmospheric physics, or a related field
  • Strong experimental background in ultrafast optics, laser spectroscopy, frequency-comb technology, remote sensing, or related areas
  • Independence, excellent project management skills and enthusiasm for interdisciplinary climate research
  • Additional assets: experience with dual-comb spectroscopy, nonlinear frequency conversion, free-space optical links, atmospheric sensing, or field-deployed instrumentation.
What We Offer
  • A 2-year postdoctoral position at the interface of frequency-comb technology, laser spectroscopy, atmospheric physics, isotope science, and climate research
  • Access to excellent infrastructure in our laser labs and to research stations in the Swiss alps

A visible role in a new interdisciplinary initiative with strong potential for high-impact publications and follow-up funding

  • Attractive employment conditions and competitive salary (gross annual range CHF 91,000 – 103,000) according to the regulations of the Canton of Bern.
  • Diversity and inclusion

We are committed to building a diverse research group and especially welcome applications from women and people underrepresented in physical sciences. We are happy to discuss flexible working and support needs.

Your Benefits

Strong research infrastructure and international network

Central location in the heart of Bern

Access to cutting-edge technology and innovation

Inspiring work environment
