Title

School Bus Aide

Responsibilities
  • Helps with bus loading and unloading procedures. Operates the wheelchair lift.
  • Assists students with mobility needs. Ensure that students are comfortable and safely secured either by seatbelts or to a tether if student has vest. Double checks that wheelchairs are properly secured before the bus starts.
  • Inspects harnesses, restraints, and other safety devices. Immediately corrects or reports unsafe conditions and/or defective equipment.
  • Offers help when students ask, or their behavior suggests they need assistance or assists with personal hygiene.
  • Respects personal privacy. Maintains the confidentiality of privileged information.
  • Takes precautions to ensure staff/student safety. Does not leave students unsupervised.
  • Learns proper emergency bus evacuations procedures and assists students as needed.
  • Anticipates and is prepared to offer assistance when aware of passengers with medical or other health considerations.
  • Promptly documents all injuries that require medical attention.
  • Monitors student behavior. Enforces safety regulations. Maintains high standards and upholds the student conduct code.
  • Promotes the proper use and care of school property. Reports student discipline problems, vandalism, and other related concerns.
  • Watches for student behavior that may indicate a problem (e.g., profanity, teasing, bullying, distress, etc.). Intervenes and/or reports concerns to an administrator.
  • Reports evidence of suspected child abuse as required by law.
  • Participates in staff meetings and professional growth opportunities as directed.
  • Wears appropriate work attire and maintains a neat appearance.
  • Performs other specific job-related duties as directed.
  • Abides by all school policies, state laws, and administrative rules.

  • Visual and auditory acuity within professionally determined normal ranges, with correction if needed.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective organizational, problem solving, and time management skills.
  • Ability to learn and comprehend information from procedures manuals and other materials.
  • Ability to physically move through the bus, center and classrooms.
  • Ability to maintain composure and perform responsibilities under pressure and in cases of accidents or other emergencies.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
  • Works in standard school bus environment.
Qualifications Education
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Bilingual, both oral and written, ability (English/Spanish) is preferred.
Experience
  • Successful prior experience working in a school and/or transportation setting preferred.
