Position: Immediate: Teacher, ELD, Bethesda-Chevy Chase HS, 1.0 FTE

Job Summary

Under the direction of the school principal, plans for and provides ELD instruction for students eligible for ELD services (formerly ESOL) through the state‑mandated English proficiency test. Collaborates with administrators, counselors, teachers and other staff about individual EML students and their needs; serves as a resource for information on EML students, cultural and linguistic differences, English language development, the ELD instructional program;

explains the program to parents; and provides support for students, parents, staff and the community as needed.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan and deliver ELD instruction to eligible students.
  • Collaborate with school staff to address the needs of individual EML students.
  • Act as a resource for students, parents, staff and the community regarding ELD and cultural‑linguistic matters.
  • Explain the ELD instructional program to parents.
  • Perform physical duties as required by the job.

Qualifications & Experience
  • Dual certification in English/ELD preferred;
    Maryland teacher certification in ESOL/ELD required.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Considerable knowledge of second‑language teaching and learning methods.
  • Fluency in another language (preferred).
  • Excellent oral and written communication and human‑relations skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with administrators, counselors, teachers and other staff.
  • Ability to support students in adjusting to the academic and cultural environment of MCPS.
