Description:
Under direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and works in collaboration with the general education teacher. Monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities. Assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP). Physical Demands:

Special Requirements:
Required to attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement. Teachers employed in special education schools or discrete special education service models are required to successfully complete specific courses provided by MCPS. The courses are designed to meet the needs of students with disabilities, particularly courses in behavioral management which include nonviolent crisis interventions.
Teachers in these identified schools and programs will be required to support behavioral interventions.
Job Specific Information:
This position begins effective September 1, 2025. The duty day is Monday to Friday, 8:50-3:14 PM. .3 Reading Initiative + .5 Special Education (LC) Academic Intervention. The wage range for this position is a salary between 80% of $64,591 and $131,472 based on education and experience. For information about benefits, please follow the link below:
- Knowledge of the MCPS curriculum for the grade/content range of the position and MCPS special education program.
- Thorough knowledge of IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, and research-based reading instruction.
- Multicultural education and assessments; knowledge of ESSA (2015), IDEA (2004), and state/federal special education policies and procedures.
- Ability to provide instructional support and to work well with students with disabilities, teachers, and parents/guardians.
- Ability to adapt instructional programs and materials; excellent communication skills.
- Knowledge of and ability to apply the six performance standards of the MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).
- Bachelor’s degree in special education from an accredited college or university.
- Fluent in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment.
- Student teaching in the area of exceptionality or two years of teaching experience at the appropriate level (elementary or secondary).
- Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience may be considered.
- Certificate License:
Meets Maryland State Department of Education SPC I in special education; certification in a content area is desirable.
