Summer Academy Health Specialist

Horizons Greater Washington is seeking a Health Specialist for its Summer Academy to fill the crucial role of ensuring the health and safety of its students. The Health Specialist will be responsible for providing first aid and medical assistance to students in grades 1-9 during a 5-week summer program.

Schedule

The typical daily schedule will be Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 3:00 pm.

  • * There will be no program on Friday, July 19th, in observance of Juneteenth

The Health Specialist is an employee of Horizons Greater Washington. The Health Specialist at the Maret Site will provide health support for the Horizons students during the five-week program, as well as to the students who attend the Maret summer camp.

HGW supports over 400 students across grades 1–9 with robust year‑round programming. Our approach is centered on whole‑child development, specifically focusing on building problem‑solving skills, fostering a strong sense of community responsibility, and instilling respect for self and others. By maintaining this multi‑year commitment from the first to the ninth grade, HGW cultivates meaningful, long‑term connections between diverse learners and dedicated, supportive staff.

Our program design and staff practices utilize a Positive Youth Development framework, prioritizing engagement, interaction, support, and a safe environment to effectively meet the needs of our youth.

The cornerstone of our work is the five‑week Summer Academy, which expertly blends high‑quality academics—with a specific focus on math, humanities, literacy, and STEAM—with comprehensive social‑emotional learning, arts instruction, swimming, and confidence‑building opportunities.

Position Description

The Health Specialist will play a crucial role in ensuring the health and safety of approximately 135 Horizons students and will also support, as needed, up to 50‑60 students at the host school camp. The Health Specialist will work closely with the program staff and faculty to address any health concerns, implement preventive measures, and provide immediate medical support as needed.

The Health Specialist will report directly to the Site Director and will collaborate closely with the administrative team and teaching staff to ensure a safe and enriching experience for all participants in the summer program.

Core Duties and Responsibilities
  • First Aid Provision:
    Be readily available to administer first aid to students and staff, handling minor injuries and illnesses during the program hours.
  • Medical Assessment:
    Conduct initial assessments of health‑related issues, promptly addressing any concerns that arise and taking appropriate action based on the severity of the situation.
  • Emergency Response:
    Respond swiftly and effectively in emergency situations, coordinating with local emergency services if necessary and ensuring proper documentation.
  • Record Keeping:
    Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date records of all medical incidents, treatments provided, and any pertinent follow‑up actions, and complete and submit incident reports as needed, adhering to privacy and confidentiality regulations.
