Surgical Tech, Medical Assistant
Pay or shift range: $25 USD to $35 USD. The estimated range is the budgeted amount for this position. Final offers are based on various factors, including skill set, experience, location, qualifications and other job-related reasons.
DescriptionPosition Summary / Scope of responsibility

The Surgical Technician plays a vital role before, during, and after a surgical procedure. The Surgical Technician assists Surgeons and other healthcare professionals during surgeries including preparing the operating room for surgery, preparing patients for surgery, and sterilizing surgical equipment.
Primary Responsibilities
The incumbent may be asked to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically stated in this job description. The duties and responsibilities of the position are to be carried out in a manner that is consistent with the Mission, Core Values and Operating Principles of CAO.
- Maintains a sterile environment in the operating rooms.
- Checking and verifying list of instruments and surgical supplies before each procedure.
- Prepares patients for surgery, including washing and disinfecting incision sites, and applying sterile drapes on the patient.
- Anticipates Surgeon and patient needs during a procedure.
- Passes instruments and other surgical supplies to the Surgeon and other health professionals during operations.
- Utilizes correct body mechanics in moving, transporting, and positioning patients, stretchers, and/or tables in order to prevent injury to patient and personnel.
- Ensures patients receive excellent care before, during, and after surgery.
- Improves efficiency of Surgeons and other professionals in the operating rooms.
- Stocks adequate supplies for surgeries based on the Surgeon’s preferences.
- Reports observed or suspected breaks in sterile technique and acts according to policy.
- Documents patient-care records and other forms according to facility policies and procedures.
- Accurately advises others responsible for care of the patient about the patient’s status.
- Participate in orientation and education of all operating room staff on an ongoing basis.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Reporting Relationships
The Surgical Tech reports directly to the Director of Nursing.
This role has no direct reports.
Required Education and Experience
- Must have a high school diploma, or GED.
- 2 years’ experience working as a surgical technician.
- Certification as a surgical technologist or similar experience in practical nursing or an operating room required.
- Current Basic Life Support certificate required.
- CPR Certified
- Knowledge of medical terminology and human anatomy preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of operation and maintenance of equipment and supplies located in the operation room.

- Must be able to sit for long periods of time and lift up to 50 pounds.
