Position: Ophthalmic Technician - Satellite Office (Ophthalmology)

Ophthalmic Technician – Satellite Office (Ophthalmology)

We are seeking an Ophthalmic Technician to provide clinical support to physicians at the Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins University. No experience required for training; rather, exceptional candidates with a strong foundation in eye care and a commitment to learning will thrive.

Responsibilities
  • Record patient history, ocular history, medications, allergies, and family history.
  • Assess pupil response, afferent pupillary defect, and central visual field with Amsler grid.
  • Measure visual acuity (distance & near), intraocular pressure using applanation tonometry, and perform Humphrey visual field testing.
  • Operate OCT, IOL Master, Pentacam, and perform accurate refractions and keratometry.
  • Conduct color vision, depth perception, and ocular motility screening.
  • Use slit lamp for ocular surface examinations and perform special tests such as bright field acuity, optometry screens, and pachymetry.
  • Assist in basic maintenance/repair of clinical equipment and maintain sterilization of instruments.
  • Compile and enter data for clinical studies and participate in research projects.
  • Educate patients on contact lens insertion/removal and eye‑care practices.
  • Perform ultrasound scans and calculate IOL power for cataract surgery.
  • Maintain exam‐room supplies, monitor medication expiration, and ensure compliance with JCAHO requirements.
  • Handle in‑office procedures and support front‑desk operations.
  • Respond promptly to clinical support mail, process refill requests, prior authorizations, and track forms.
  • Maintain general medical knowledge of ocular anatomy, systemic diseases, and emergency management.
  • Obtain and maintain Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) certification and CPR certification.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum one year of experience as an Ophthalmic Technician, or equivalent education/experience under JHU’s equivalence formula.
  • Must obtain Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) from JCAHPO within 18 months of start date.
  • CPR certification required.

Location:

JH at Bethesda, MD. The position is full‑time, Monday‑Friday (8:30am – 5:00pm).
