The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is offering research opportunities for college students and postgraduates to participate in research projects and developmental activities at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) in Bethesda, Maryland.

What will I be doingParticipants will have the opportunity to add their perspective and academic expertise to innovative research in projects related to the prevention and treatment of heart, lung, blood, and sleep disorders while learning from and collaborating with a highly skilled team of NIH/NHLBI staff and researchers in a unique laboratory setting. Opportunities are available for a variety of NHLBI focus areas.

- Reimbursement of travel/training and/or relocation allowances is determined on a case-by-case basis
Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program and may be purchased through ORAU health insurance plan.
Appointment LengthThe initial appointment is typically 40 hours per week for up to one year. Appointments may be renewed annually up to four additional years upon recommendation of NIH/NHLBI, contingent on the availability of funds. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidates.
Nature of the AppointmentThe participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOE, NIH, NHLBI or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

Qualifications- Opportunities may be available to students and postgraduates with a bachelor s, master s or doctoral degree in a related field within the last 5 years. If more than five years since receipt of degree, the applicant must have an academic background and experience in a relevant field and must be seeking to gain new knowledge/experience in order to expand career opportunities or to advance professionally.
- The ideal candidates would have superior academic performance, strong analytical, organizational, research and communication (oral and written) skills, and demonstrated capacity for creative thinking and problem-solving skills. Candidates should be a strong team player who performs equally well independently.

- Current Resume/CV including academic history, employment history, relevant experiences, and publication list
- Transcripts/Academic Records — Recent unofficial transcripts or copies of the student academic records printed by the applicant or by academic advisors from internal institutional systems may be submitted to complete the application; if a copy of the official transcript is not available at the time of application. If selected, a copy of the most recent official transcript will be required before the appointment can start.
- One professional recommendation — Applicants are required to provide contact information for at least one recommendation in order to submit the application. Recommendations must be submitted through the Zintellect application system. Recommenders will be asked to complete a recommendation in Zintellect. Recommendations submitted via email will not be accepted. The recommendation must be submitted before an offer is made.
