Position Objective

Provide services as a Laboratory Technician Assistant in support of the overall functions of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The Laboratory Technician Assistant plans, executes, and arranges laboratory experiments, new techniques and procedures; and performs laboratory techniques relating to scientific research. Operates laboratory equipment; prepares specimens and equipment for use; performs minor/preventive maintenance; updates staff on equipment problems; collects, prepares, and manages samples;

analyses and documents procedures with detailed reporting for use by senior staff; maintains inventory of laboratory supplies; and initiates purchase orders. Advises staff in performing routine laboratory tests and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform fundamental procedures required for research projects.
  • Execute a variety of laboratory techniques and procedures, including tissue culture, cell separation, protein analysis, and quantitative and qualitative analysis.
  • Carry out experiments on samples according to protocols and maintain detailed records.
  • Prepare materials and equipment for experiments; ensure all necessary supplies are available and in good order.
  • Maintain stocked supplies and records of working reagents, including fixatives, buffers, solvents, and staining.
  • Process and organize multiple samples simultaneously; monitor sample inventory and storage.
  • Perform quality control procedures to ensure accuracy of each test system, sample processing, storage, and inventory.
  • Maintain inventory system and sample storage according to outlined guidelines; retrieve and catalog samples with proper authorization.
  • Collect, enter, and analyze research data in laboratory notebooks and databases; conduct statistical analysis and prepare reports and summaries.
  • Provide technical help and expertise to lab members, including training on safety standards and proper use of equipment.
  • Clean, sterilize, and calibrate laboratory equipment; perform preventive maintenance and generate maintenance reports.
  • Coordinate general laboratory maintenance, including equipment upkeep, calibration, and scheduling of waste container pickup.
  • Implement storage and distribution of biological samples for future scientific research; manage supply flow by tracking consumption of laboratory materials.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and calibrating various laboratory equipment and instruments.
  • Plan and execute experiments for in vitro and in vivo studies, including Western blotting and immunofluorescence/immunohistochemistry.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences or related field.
  • 1 to 10 years of experience in Life Sciences.
  • Experience working with lab equipment and performing biological research.
  • Knowledge in managing hazardous waste.
  • Skilled in NIH protocols (POTS).
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ability to multi‑task and pay close attention to detail.
  • Excellent analytical, interpersonal, organizational, and time‑management skills.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
