Ophthalmic Technician - Satellite Office (Ophthalmology)

Working with faculty, the Clinic Manager and Clinic Supervisor, we are seeking an Ophthalmic Technician whose primary role is to provide clinical support to physicians. Secondary responsibilities include limited administrative duties such as responding to messages from patients and physicians, and assisting with patient requests for refills, forms completion, and prior authorizations.

The Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins University offers an exciting opportunity to train for a career as an Ophthalmic Technician. No experience is required. This role provides state‑of‑the‑art training that prepares candidates for future careers such as Clinic Manager, Supervisor, Assistant Administrator, Orthoptist, Optometrist, Marketing, IT, and Research. It also offers pre‑med students valuable clinical experience.

Responsibilities
  • Records patient history, ocular history, past surgeries, medical conditions, medications, allergies, learning assessment, falls risk and family history.
  • Checks pupil response to light and afferent pupillary defect.
  • Measures central visual field using Amsler Grid.
  • Instills eye drops under physician direction.
  • Measures and records distance and near visual acuity.
  • Measures and records intraocular pressure using applanation tonometry, pneumatic tonometry, or Schiotz‑type indentation tonometer.
  • Performs Humphrey visual field testing; refers patients for further testing when appropriate.
  • Performs OCT.
  • Performs IOL Master measurements to prepare patients for cataract surgery.
  • Performs Pentacam measurements.
  • Performs accurate refractions.
  • Tests color vision and depth perception (stereopsis).
  • Screens for ocular motility disorders.
  • Uses slit lamp to examine eye surface.
  • Performs special testing such as Bright Field Acuity Testing and pachymetry.
  • Performs basic maintenance or repair of clinical equipment.
  • Compiles and enters data for clinical studies; may participate in other clinical research projects.
  • Teaches patients how to insert and remove contact lenses.
  • Performs ultrasound scans to measure axial length of the eye, adjusting technique for patients with high myopia, hyperopia, poor fixation, nystagmus, retinal detachment, corneal problems, or intraocular lenses.
  • Performs accurate keratometry readings.
  • Calculates intraocular lens power using various formulas.
  • Takes fundus photographs as needed.
  • Assist with in‑office procedures.
  • Maintains exam room supplies, medication expiration dates, instrument sterilization, and environment cleanliness.
  • Understanding and practicing microbial control fundamentals.
  • Maintains refrigerator logs, sharps container, etc.
  • Ensures clinic complies with JCAHO requirements.
Non‑Clinical Duties
  • Responds to epic in‑basket messages and patient questions.
  • Processes refill requests and prior authorizations for medications and procedures.
  • Supports front desk staff by triaging scheduled appointments and addressing clinical questions.
  • Manages and orders medications for intravitreal injections.
  • Assists in tracking and processing forms such as MVA, disability, FLMA.
  • Provides input on templates/schedules to maximize patient flow.
  • Maintains general medical knowledge of ocular anatomy, systemic diseases, ocular diseases, and ocular emergencies.
  • Maintains required COA ophthalmic technician certification.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of experience as an Ophthalmic Technician and certification as Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) within 18 months of start date.
  • CPR certification required.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience; additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma, per JHU equivalency guidelines.

Location:

JH at Bethesda (SOM Oph Satellites).

Schedule:

Monday‑Friday 8:30 am‑5:00 pm (with flexibility). Salary range: $19.75–$39.12 HRLY ($27.19‑$39.12 targeted; commensurate with experience). Classified title:
Ophthalmic Technician. FLSA status:
Non‑Exempt.
