Position Summary

Position in this class is assigned to the local school to assist the administration in maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for the school community. Under the general supervision of the security team leader, the Security Assistant assists in screening visitor access to school facilities, maintaining student class attendance, and other responsibilities related to school security operations. The assistant receives guidance and assistance from the security team leader on more difficult or unusual situations.

Responsibilities

Assist the security team leader in screening visitor access to school facilities and maintaining student class attendance.

Perform general security duties such as monitoring, patrolling, and responding to incidents.

Maintain a safe and secure learning environment for the school community.

Provide guidance and assistance when required for difficult or unusual situations.

Physical Demands &

Special Requirements
  • Physical strength sufficient to intervene in fights and physically restrain persons.
  • Stamina to spend long periods of time walking, standing, and completing security patrol duties.
  • Ability to patrol outdoors in inclement and extreme weather conditions.
  • Required to work flexible hours, including weekends, and occasionally overtime, as assigned by the principal/security team leader.
  • Required to wear the designated security uniforms.
Job Specific Information
  • Only candidates who completed the screening interview for this position with the Dept. School Safety & Security will be considered.
  • Preference to bilingual English/Spanish candidates with working knowledge of safety procedures/practices, behavior management techniques, investigative procedures, and excellent written/oral communication skills.
  • The wage range for this position is between $24.45 and $34.82 per hour, based on years of service.

Salary Range: $24.45 – $34.82 per hour

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Knowledge of procedures and practices for ensuring the safety and welfare of others.
  • Knowledge of behavior management techniques.
  • Knowledge of security practices and procedures.
  • Investigative procedures knowledge desirable.
  • Knowledge of school and MCPS policies and procedures on student attendance, suspension, student involvement, and student behavior standards.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and staff, and to understand each staff member’s role in student attendance, behavior, and building security.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with staff and students and to perform assigned tasks under team leader supervision.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
Education, Training & Experience
  • High School or GED diploma required;
    Associates degree preferred.
  • College coursework in criminology, law enforcement, or related fields.
  • Experience in work involving the welfare and safety of students or others, preferably in an educational environment.
  • Experience in investigation desirable.
  • Experience in safety and security of persons and property, preferably as a police officer.
  • Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the necessary knowledge, abilities, and skills may be considered.
  • Certificate/License: possession of a valid Maryland class C noncommercial driver’s license, or equivalent.
  • First aid and CPR certification.
