HJF is seeking a Scientist II to develop and supervise research projects. The role involves investigating the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products, and problems. The incumbent will develop new technologies and protocols, manage laboratory operations, and provide administrative oversight of space, personnel, and supply management. The position requires teaching advanced laboratory procedures and supervising laboratory technicians.

The Scientist II will work on breast cancer immuno‑oncology treatments, including cell therapies such as TIL, γ‑delta T cells, CAR‑T cells, and bispecific antibody therapeutics, as part of IND application preparation. The role supports the John P. Murtha Cancer Center at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, and is coordinated by Dr. Geeta Upadhyay, Scientific Director of the CBCP, MCCRP, at the USUHS campus.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine through research, management, and support of scientific programs that benefit armed forces members and civilians.

Responsibilities
  • Plan, execute, and oversee laboratory research, formulate experimental hypotheses, and design experimental protocols.
  • Monitor scientific literature, prepare written reports and manuscripts for scientific journals, and prepare patent applications.
  • Coordinate and prepare new grant and funding applications.
  • Process and interpret experimental data.
  • Make scientific observations, maintain detailed workbooks/documentation that meet professional and industry standards.
  • Collaborate with technical and professional staff, train and supervise technical staff.
  • Manage, lead, and mentor staff; monitor productivity and make operational or staffing adjustments as necessary.
  • Work with section supervisors and the laboratory director on complex problems and present solutions.
  • Ensure standardization across sections and enforce good clinical practices for CAP accreditation; assist in developing QA/QC plans and procedures.
  • Participate in identifying disease situations and design appropriate laboratory support for such projects.
  • May include budgetary responsibility to plan, forecast, prepare, and approve budgets.
  • Maintain laboratory information systems for two laboratory sections and recommend improvements.
  • Oversee appropriate training for employees, write user manuals, establish priorities, and maintain security and confidentiality of information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or directed by the supervisor, including attendance at required training for the role.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Lead and supervise technicians, direct work assignments, and provide input on employee performance evaluations.
Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • Doctoral Degree required.
  • Minimum of 5-8 years’ experience required.
Required Knowledge,

Skills And Abilities
  • Knowledge of complex scientific procedures and techniques in the immuno‑oncology field, including small molecules, CAR‑T, and bispecific antibodies.
  • Multi‑color flow cytometry.
  • Experience with IND application assembly is a plus.
  • Animal cancer research experience and a strong inclination to work with patient sample material for immuno‑oncology and precision medicine challenges.
  • Knowledge of FDA requirements in drug development.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical procedures.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1 Public Trust.
Work Environment

This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.

Compensation

The annual salary range for this position is $88,600–$120,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
