New York, NY – $50,000 – $55,000 (Full-time, Entry level)
Job DescriptionMental Health Association of Nassau County (MHANC) is a not-for-profit membership organization dedicated to improving mental health in our community through advocacy, education, program development, and the delivery of direct services. We seek a motivated individual to help adults with mental illness by becoming a Residential Counselor.
The Residential Counselor provides assistance and support to individuals diagnosed with mental illness residing in MHANC homes. Counselors promote greater independence by assisting residents with daily activities, personal care, skill building, community integration, and counseling around everyday activities. Positions include weekdays and/or weekends, scheduled by the Program Supervisor.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Implement nutritional components, including shopping, menu planning, food preparation/clean‑up, and dietary adjustments.
- Implement activities of daily living.
- Coordinate care (psychiatric, medical, dental, etc.) by conducting collateral contacts, scheduling, and attending treatment team meetings.
- Develop service plans focused on client‑centered skills for independent living and review plans quarterly.
- Conduct restorative service sessions and document progress electronically.
- Manage crises and emergency situations.
- Implement all facets of the functional program, adhering to agency and program policies.
- Assist with monthly fire drills and ensure compliance with fire and safety procedures.
- Coordinate, implement, and provide transportation for recreational activities.
- Assist with maintenance and upkeep of residence and property, reporting concerns.
- Conduct and document weekly community meetings with residents to address issues.
- Attend staff meetings, in‑service training, and other training as instructed.
- Work with other departments to coordinate care.
- Perform related duties as required.
Education & Experience
- High School Diploma and five years’ experience in human services.
- Bachelor’s degree in human services or related field preferred.
- Experience in a community residence setting preferred.
Other Qualifications
- Valid NYS Driver’s License required.
- Basic computer skills.
