Join our ambitious and dedicated Flood and Coastal Risk Management team and play a key role in delivering projects that protect people, property, infrastructure, and the environment. From small highway drainage schemes to major flood alleviation projects and coastal protection works to climate resilience initiatives.

This is an exciting opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects, applying innovative engineering solutions to some of the most pressing environmental challenges facing our region.

This is an ideal opportunity for someone who:

  • Has experience in flood risk management, coastal engineering, civil engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Has knowledge of project and contract management, including programme delivery, budget control, and quality assurance.
  • Has experience in relevant engineering and modelling software, such as AutoCAD, GIS, Micro Drainage, Info Drainage, or similar tools.
  • Has a strong understanding of relevant legislation, guidance, and standards, including the Flood and Water Management Act, Water Resources Act, Land Drainage Act, CDM Regulations, and National Planning Policy Framework.
  • Can effectively communicate complex technical information to colleagues and relevant stakeholders

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and deliver flood risk and coastal engineering projects from feasibility through to construction and completion.
  • Develop and implement engineering solutions that reduce flood risk and enhance coastal resilience.
  • Prepare designs, specifications, contract documents, technical reports, and business cases in support of project delivery.
  • Monitor project performance, programmes, budgets, and financial information to ensure effective delivery and value for money.
  • Oversee contractors, ensuring works are delivered safely, efficiently, and to the required standards.
  • Undertake routine and reactive asset inspections ensuring the council’s asset portfolio remains operational and fit for purpose

You will work on a diverse range of challenges, delivering practical flood risk management solutions that protect homes, businesses and critical infrastructure.

  • Multi Award winning £19m Cottingham and Orchard Park Flood Alleviation Scheme (COPFAS)
  • Multi Award winning £12m Hessle Foreshore Tidal Defence Scheme (HFTDS)

It is not essential that you have worked for a Council or the public sector previously, as appropriate mentoring and training will be provided.

The Council offers several benefits, including a generous pension scheme and leave allowance, various flexible working options and access to appropriate further training and education. This includes a training agreement with the Institution of Civil Engineers to coordinate both the academic and practical training leading to a professional qualification: either Eng Tech MICE, or IEng MICE, or CEng MICE.
