Who We’re Looking For
The Police Department seeks a qualified Civilian Investigator. The role involves complex, specialized investigations of financial crimes, property crimes and crimes against persons. Work supports the Detective Bureau through misdemeanor and certain felony investigations. The ideal candidate knows current laws and regulations, is familiar with computer systems and applications, and maintains accurate case files. Strong case‑management experience, organizational skills, teamwork and communication abilities are required.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is a journey‑level, non‑sworn technical classification. Investigators carry a full caseload, resolve cases independently, but do not carry a firearm, respond to incidents, or make arrests.

Selection Process
- Candidates must meet the minimum qualifications at the time of application.

The selection process may include:
- Review of minimum qualifications and required documents (Associate’s Degree or transcripts, California Driver’s License).
- Supplemental questionnaire responses.
- Oral interview slated for the week of February 9th, 2026.
- Background check, including DOJ and FBI investigations, credit report, criminal and DMV review, personal references.
Eligibility List
Successful candidates will be placed on an Eligibility List for current and future vacancies in this classification; the list remains open for a defined duration.
Proof of Education
Upload copies of licenses, transcripts, degrees or related documents to your Government Jobs account before the closing date. Transcripts from foreign education must be evaluated by NACES or AICE.
Conviction History
Finalist candidates will be fingerprinted and the report used to determine any conflicts with job duties. A conviction does not automatically preclude employment; applicants may explain circumstances as part of the Fair Chance Act process.
