Staff Accountant

Serving Schools is hiring a Staff Accountant for Biddeford and Dayton Schools & Southern Maine Administrative Collaborative. The role is full‑time and entry level.

• Serves three organizations:
  Biddeford, Dayton Schools, and Southern Maine Administrative Collaborative
• Reports to:
  
  Business Manager
• Supervises: N/A

• Daily monitoring of the trial balance, including updating the Chart of Accounts
• Analyze account balances, investigate unusual items, determine necessary adjustments, and complete reconciliation of balance sheet accounts; assist internal and external audit personnel as needed
• Review daily general ledger activity for clearings and unusual changes
• Maintain the chart of accounts and ensure timely completion of account reconciliations
• Maintain and update capital asset system
• Provide analytical assistance with respect to financial reports and other financial data, and other duties as needed
• Prepare accounting entries related to the month‑end close process
• Calculate, prepare, and post recurring and non‑recurring journal entries with appropriate supporting documentation
• Provide sufficient documentation and explanations to budget and month‑end closing balances
• Provide documentation to auditors and examiners, as needed
• Assist and complete projects related to regulatory reporting and financial reporting
• Cross‑train with team for responsibilities to provide adequate backup
• Develop and maintain documentation of instructions and procedures for responsibilities
• Participate in preparation of ongoing internal and external financial reporting
• Perform as backup for payroll and accounts payable, including reviewing and coding invoices for payment

• Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in an accounting related position
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Criminal History Records Check by the Maine Dept of Education (fingerprinting required)
