Overview
Fiber Materials Inc (FMI) is a leading provider of high-temperature materials and composites for the Department of Defense and NASA. The Maine facility focuses on multidirectional reinforced Carbon/Carbon (C/C) and Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) used in thermal protection systems, re-entry vehicle nose tips, rocket motor throats, nozzles, and lightweight armor.
Our materials are used on the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle, NASA's Mars 2020 heat shield, missile programs, jet engine airfoils, and Army ground vehicle armor.
Your RoleEnergy and success drive an energetic Machining Engineer into our Engineering team. As a Machining Engineer, you support current production systems and drive improvements in safety, quality, cost, and cycle time. You coordinate and direct projects, make detailed plans, and direct integration of technical activities such as process improvements, equipment installation/modification, and material system development.
Job Responsibilities- Help evolve technical machining center(s) and product machining definition in production facility
- Identify, design, and implement process improvements using CNC, Lean/Six Sigma tools, and GD&T
- Provide technical support for 7×24 manufacturing facility
- Analyze technology requirements, resource needs, and schedules to assess and plan project execution
- Perform root cause analysis for failure investigations and data analysis; make data-driven decisions
- Support non-conformance program and implement preventive actions
- Write periodic reports or oral presentations to management and customers on specific projects
- Design and develop new equipment for future production systems
- Ensure health and safety policies are followed
- Apply quality standards to ensure compliance with certification requirements in plant applications
- Work with internal and external customers to develop and qualify process changes and provide technical services
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or closely related discipline
- 3+ years of related machining experience in manufacturing
- Experience in CNC machining
- Experience with GD&T, product or tool design and engineering drawing approval standards; GD&T training certification preferred
- Expertise with machining principals, methods, and process capability
- Demonstrated results in technical problem solving
- Strong work ethic
- Excellent attention to detail
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Experience with industrial tools and equipment preferred
- Experience in aerospace/high-temperature composites, textiles, or industrial engineering systems would distinguish the candidate
- Familiarity with Lean manufacturing principles desired
- Interest and knowledge in composites and ceramics
