Position Overview

This position will be responsible for the execution of facility maintenance and testing activities in high-voltage transmission substations, with an emphasis on substation and protection and control equipment. The apprentice will perform basic tasks associated with system equipment repair and maintenance, provide technical assistance and oversight to contractors, and ensure safety, work quality, and proper tracking and reporting of completed job tasks.

The apprentice will be enrolled in WETT’s four-year apprentice program once onboarded. This position is located in Big Spring, TX, and reports to the Field Operations Supervisor.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
  • Directly perform or oversee contractors performing installation, maintenance, testing, adjustment, troubleshooting, repair, and switching of relay and substation equipment.
  • Conduct monthly, quarterly, bi-annual, and annual system inspections.
  • Safely operate equipment such as bucket trucks, aerial lifts, skid steers, and forklifts.
  • Perform diagnostic testing and analysis on protection and control and substation equipment.
  • Maintain WETT vehicles, test equipment, and tools in good working condition.
  • Check, verify, and prepare routine reports.
  • Comply with WETT safety and environmental policies.
  • Participate in an on‑call rotation.
  • Complete the four‑year apprentice program administered by WETT.
Essential Knowledge, Skills, Experience, and Qualifications
  • Education:

    High school diploma required; associate’s degree in an electrical field preferred.
  • Entry level; preferred previous experience or internship in the electric utility or electrical contractor industry.
  • General knowledge of electrical equipment such as circuit breakers, switches, relays, and transmission line components.
  • Awareness of ERCOT and its role in the Texas electric utility grid.
  • Understanding of transmission line systems, maintenance standards, techniques, applicable codes, and standards.
  • Adaptability to changing technology, ability to work outdoors for extended periods, ability to lift over 50 lbs, work independently and with others, self‑starter, positive attitude, willingness to work overtime or long hours, and ability to work in close proximity to energized equipment.
  • Technical skills: use of a multi‑meter to troubleshoot electrical problems, read and decipher electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • OSHA 10 or 30 certification encouraged for advancement.
  • Computer skills: proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Access) and use of computer-based systems for data entry, tracking, and test equipment.
  • Competencies:

    strong communication, organization, documentation, time management.
Job Progression Opportunities

Progression will be reviewed with the supervisor based on department needs, growth, and progression in the apprenticeship program.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The majority of the work is performed outdoors and requires extended periods of sitting, standing, kneeling, and operating a motor vehicle. Daily use of personal protective equipment is required, and occasional overnight travel to the corporate office or training locations may be necessary.
