The Middlesex Sheriff’s Office (“MSO”) is seeking a qualified professional to work as a Correction Officer in Food Services at the Middlesex Jail and House of Correction in Billerica, MA. This is a full‑time, non‑exempt position covered under a collective bargaining agreement (NEPBA, Local 500). The position is flexible, with a schedule between 9:30 AM and 9:30 PM, and days off on Tuesday/Wednesday.
Candidates must be able to attend a thirteen‑week MSO Correction Officer / Basic Training Academy.
The selected individual will be cognizant of the confidential and sensitive nature of working in a law enforcement agency and must comply with all institutional rules regarding safety and security.
Responsibilities- Prepare meals and ensure controlled distribution under the supervision of the Chef.
- Enforce health and safety regulations.
- Maintain security of the work area and kitchen tools.
- Supervise inmates assigned to Food Services.
- Prepare reports on disturbances, security breaches, fires, accidents, and monthly evaluations of inmates and detainees.
- Patrol the facility, make rounds, conduct headcounts, observe inmate behavior, investigate suspicious behavior and contraband, and enforce regulations related to meals, recreation, shakedowns, showers, visits, key control, security rounds, cell checks, and inmate movement.
- Assist in training and supervising new officers.
- Perform other duties as required by MSO management.
- One (1) year of food preparation/service experience.
- Active Food Service Sanitation (Serv Safe) certification.
- Valid driver’s license and the right to operate a motor vehicle in Massachusetts, with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to attend the MSO Correction Officer / Basic Training Academy and other required training.
- Pass a criminal background check.
This position requires working in a correctional facility on a 24/7 basis, including weekends, nights, and holidays. Staff may be required to work overtime, stand and walk for prolonged periods, lift up to 100 lbs, restrain inmates, and work in adverse weather conditions.
CompensationStarting salary range is $66,822.49–$69,942.49 plus additional incentives, bonuses, and employment benefits provided through the collective bargaining agreement.
