Salary Range
- Engineer I – $72,694.54 – $97,427.62 annually
- Engineer II – $83,587.09 – $ annually
Salary reflects Step 1 and Step 7 of a 7-step pay scale. Salary at hiring will be dependent upon the applicant's education, experience, and training.
Work Schedule:
Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. This is an exempt position.
Under general supervision to perform professional engineering work involved in the design, investigation and construction of all types of public improvement projects including streets, storm drainage, water and wastewater systems; to prepare plans and specifications; and to act as a project manager on assigned projects. This is the entry level in the Engineer class series which operates under the supervision of a registered Professional Engineer in Montana.
Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the Engineer II level but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern.
Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise. Since this class is often used as a training class, employees may have limited or no directly related work experience. In addition, positions at this class level are not expected to possess registration as a Professional Engineer but must possess an Engineering-in-Training License.
Under general supervision to perform professional engineering work involved in the design, investigation and construction of engineering projects including streets, traffic controls, stormwater, solid waste, and water and wastewater systems; to prepare plans and specifications; and to act as a project manager on assigned projects. This position performs a full range of duties as assigned, working independently and exercising judgment and initiative.
Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in this class series are flexibly staffed and positions at the Engineer II level are normally filled by advancement from the Engineer I level when a Montana Registered Professional Engineers License is obtained.
- Serve as project manager on assigned projects.
- Oversee, direct and review the work of assigned professional and technical project staff.
- Establish design criteria to be used by project staff and/or outside consultants.
- Establish grades for streets, curbs and gutters, alleys or other paving projects, water and sewer lines and facilities, and similar projects.
- Prepare preliminary and final estimates of work and material requirements.
- Coordinate required advertising for bids.
- Act as a project engineer.
- Research applicable codes, regulations and requirements for assigned project.
- Develop and oversee the development of construction plans and specifications.
- Oversee and prepare changes as field conditions warrant.
- Maintain constant awareness of progress on assigned projects to assure compliance with designated time and cost schedules for project completion.
- Supervise and participate in the inspection of construction projects.
- Prepare change orders.
- Review contractors estimates and prepare/review progress payments.
- Assist construction inspectors in the interpretation of plans and resolution of problems during construction.
- Review and record drawings to ensure compliance with original plans and specifications.
- Participate in directing the activities of survey parties.
- Convert, compute, and plot information obtained in field surveys.
- Participate in the evaluation of procedures and in the development of new and improved practices.
- Participate in the development and preparation of standards for engineering design and materials of construction.
