Role Summary

As a Field Service Technician you will assist with on‑site installations, troubleshooting, repairs, and maintenance of telecommunications products and equipment that TDS sells and leases. You will have direct, face‑to‑face contact with customers, proactively promoting TDS services and products. Services include Telephony, Video/CATV/DBS, Internet, and high‑speed networks.

Because the role requires in‑field support and on‑call availability, the selected candidate must live within a 60‑minute driving distance of the Billings, MT warehouse at 2621 Holman Ave, Ste 3.

Responsibilities
  • Install, interrogate, test, splice, repair and maintain telephone equipment, general network equipment, Customer Premises Equipment, Video/CATV/DBS, fiber‑optic/copper facilities and other TDS products and services for new and existing customers.
  • Identify locations of defective cable using test equipment and repair buried, aerial, underground, and customer cable; locate cable and fiber for customer requests or construction needs.
  • Operate pole‑climbing and construction equipment; mark underground and buried facilities to prevent damage; keep an orderly log of all location requests.
  • Perform cable fault acceptance tests on newly constructed facilities.
  • Provide troubleshooting support and respond to “trouble” dispatches.
  • Support record systems for cross‑connects, line groups, network elements, etc.
  • Provide excellent customer service and proactively educate and sell TDS products and services.
  • Gain working knowledge of RUS Standards and grounding practices for splicing and maintenance of outside‑plant facilities and equipment.
Required Qualifications
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Follow TDS attendance guidelines to meet business and customer needs.
Other Qualifications
  • Successful completion of customer‑specific background checks and safety courses.
  • Availability for on‑call/standby responsibilities; willingness to travel and work overtime as needed.
  • DOT compliance for operating vehicles with a combined GVRW of >10,000 lbs.
  • A+ certification and computer networking experience.
  • Understanding of telecommunications products and services such as Inside Wiring/Cable, Internet, Fiber Optic Transmission, and Structured Wiring.
  • Experience using databases, trouble/repair/dispatch systems, plant record systems, MS Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated customer service, sales, and effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven organizational skills and ability to multi‑task.
  • Ability to operate vehicles with manual transmissions.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

Responsibilities include sitting, standing, writing, operating office equipment, moving items, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, balancing, climbing, and lifting up to 100 lbs. Work may occur outdoors or in mechanical/equipment rooms and may involve extreme weather conditions. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
