Job Description

The Binghamton Theatre Department is part of the new School of the Arts, which brings together the departments of Art and Design, Art History, Cinema, Music, and Theatre. The successful candidate will be inclined to work collaboratively with colleagues in support of new and ongoing initiatives within and beyond the department, as appropriate. The position is part of the Harpur College of Arts and Sciences multi‑year cluster hiring initiative, Arts Practice, Performance and Research in the 21st Century.

Binghamton offers a Bachelor of Arts in theatre with concentrations in acting/directing, design/technical theatre, and dance; a Bachelor of Fine Arts in musical theatre; and a Master of Arts in theatre. Because Binghamton students are notable for their high‑achieving academic record, students in these degree programs seek to explore dramaturgical and artistic depth. In addition to courses in a wide range of techniques, students participate in main stage and studio productions ranging from the classical to the contemporary, including musical, plays, and dance productions.

Position

Summary

Binghamton University seeks applicants for a full‑time, tenure‑track Assistant Professor of Dramatic Writing. We seek an established writer with an MFA or other relevant degree in Playwriting, Creative Writing, or a related field. Candidates should be working in theatre or other dramatic writing fields, with evidence of a developing national or international profile and potential for significant further artistic production. Continued production and/or publication at the professional level will be required for tenure.

The successful candidate will teach courses in play writing (beginner and intermediate) and script analysis and may also teach other courses in global dramatic literature, topics in dramatic literature, devising / new play development, and/or dramaturgy, depending on the candidate's expertise. Teaching responsibilities are normally four courses per year, with additional advising of undergraduate and graduate students, and participation in departmental service and governance.
