Position Overview

The Summer Nurse Extern program provides an opportunity for current nursing students, between their first and final year of nursing school, to receive training through clinical experience. The Extern will perform patient care procedures and related activities within the framework of the written care plan and assignments by a professional Registered Nurse. All tasks performed in this role will occur under the direction and supervision of a precepting UHS Registered Nurse.

This is a temporary position, available in summer only.

Work Locations: UHS Wilson Medical Center, Johnson City, NY; UHS Binghamton General Hospital, Binghamton, NY.

Primary Work Shift

Rotational.

Compensation Range

$19.37 - $28.09 per hour, depending on experience.

Benefits Eligibility

You will be eligible for benefits if you are hired into a regular position with at least 24 scheduled weekly hours.

Education & Experience – Minimum Required

• A High School Diploma or GED
• Currently matriculated in a two-year or four-year nursing program that leads to a Registered Nursing (RN) license
• First year of nursing school clinical coursework completed
• Ability to co-enroll in a UHS-approved, college-credit-granting summer externship course

Education & Experience – Preferred

• Previous or current employment at UHS
• Participation in the UHS EIP Program
• Previous clinical experience in an acute care or ambulatory setting
• Minimum 3.0 GPA in nursing school

License/Certification – Minimum Required

• Current CPR Certification that will remain valid throughout the summer, for the duration of the 10‑week program
