Overview

Security Officer - Safety & Security - Full Time

Ensures Guthrie’s campuses are safe and secure for patients, employees, and visitors by routinely patrolling all buildings and grounds and by responding to requests for assistance from patients, employees or visitors. Reports to the Regional Coordinator for Security or their designee. Applicants must be willing to submit to fingerprinting for a background check.

Education, License & Cert
  • Classroom training in a field relevant to the security functions with course work in the behavioral sciences is strongly preferred.
  • NYS registration as security guard, required (for New York sites).
  • Valid Drivers’ License required.
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency preferred.
Experience
  • One or more years’ experience in institutional security, preferably in a health care facility or a similar setting.
  • Working knowledge of the different departmental functions within a hospital or health care facility.
  • Working knowledge of state and federal security regulations affecting hospitals.
  • Must be experienced in effectively interacting with people and possess excellent communication skills.
Essential Functions
  • Trustworthy in safeguarding confidential information. Maintain a neat and well‑groomed appearance. May be required to work rotating shifts, nights, evenings, days, holidays, weekends, or other shifts. May also be required to work overtime hours.
  • Act in a courteous and friendly manner toward patients, visitors, employees, and all personnel.
  • Further competencies designated by the Regional Security Coordinator as changes in technology and patient care requirements occur.
  • Patrol the campus hospital and grounds to ensure all open departments are secure, closed departments are locked, and perimeter entrances/exits are secure at designated hours.
  • Maintain high visibility in the hospital emergency department.
  • Assist in transporting patients within the building or to and from vehicles as requested by nursing personnel. Respond promptly to calls for assistance. Observe for unsafe conditions and report them to the supervisor.
  • Restrain patients, visitors, or employees when necessary to protect personnel or property, or as advised by nursing personnel to assist in treatment of a patient, when required.
  • Complete detailed incident reports and submit to supervisor. Complete a minimum of eight (8) hours continuing education per year on security related issues.
  • Use time to support department goals and coordinate tasks to maximize productivity and efficiency. Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Demonstrate initiative, assist co-workers, and maintain good working relationships with internal and external customers. Establish and maintain relationships with local police and fire officials.
  • Demonstrate good judgment, assess situations, consider alternatives, and select appropriate actions. Attend annual education updates and departmental meetings.
  • Maintain good attendance and punctuality.
  • Complies with requirement for annual physical assessment within the appropriate timeframe.
Other Duties
  • Travel for this position is sometimes required.

Compensation

Pay rate ranges from $17.00 - $25.80 per hour.
