Duties Description

Diagnose and correct the causes of faulty vehicle and equipment operation. Overhaul, adjust, and repair gaseous fuel engines, clutches, transmissions, and differentials; ignition, wiring, lighting, fuel, cooling, braking, and complex hydraulic systems; steering, wheel and suspension mechanisms; and body, cab and frame components. Conduct NYS inspections. Rebuild starters, generators, compressors, pumps, spreaders, and small engines, mowers, track vehicles, loaders, cranes, shovels, lifts, hydraulic excavators, and other equipment.

Diagnose and repair electronic engine control systems, anti‑lock brake systems, and air conditioning. May be required to do cutting and welding. Make road calls, test drive equipment, and complete reports using parts catalogs.

Utilize the department fleet management software and DOT electronic systems for repair scheduling and parts stock management. Overtime is required and, during the Winter Maintenance Season, may be placed on a shift other than the day shift. Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Four years of experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic responsible for diagnosing and repairing vehicle and/or equipment operation, covering multiple automotive and/or diesel systems. Specify types of repair work performed and vehicle types on application.
  • OR successful completion of the New York State Department of Labor approved Diesel Engine Mechanic apprenticeship.
  • An Associate's degree in automotive or diesel repair technology.
  • Substitution:
    Education may replace up to two years of experience. One year of experience may be substituted for graduation from a technical or vocational program in automotive or diesel technology or for a one‑year post‑high‑school certificate program.
  • Within one year from appointment, candidates must obtain a valid NYS Inspection Certification and a valid New York State Class B Commercial Driver’s License with no air brake restriction.
  • All candidates must pass a pre‑employment physical/medical examination and drug test. Cannabis use is prohibited.
Salary and Benefits

Base pay range: $59,425.00/yr – $70,548.00/yr.

Additional geographic pay differentials apply: $9,000 for Broome, Chenango, Delaware, Otsego, Schoharie, Tioga; $16,000 for Sullivan County.
