Stroke Nurse Specialist

We are seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic registered nurse with the passion to develop and deliver high‑quality stroke care for the Wirral population.

The ideal candidate should be able to work autonomously and have freedom to act in prioritising and co‑ordinating patient assessments, referrals and reviews.

Stroke Department Services
  • Hyper‑acute and acute stroke services with agreed pathway and protocols
  • 24/7 stroke thrombolysis and further assessment for thrombectomy in Walton
  • Dedicated nurse triage TIA clinics
  • Daily outpatient clinics
  • Stroke rehabilitation unit at Clatterbridge Hospital and Early Supported Discharge
Main Duties of the Job
  • To provide skilled management and care delivery of neurovascular conditions from admission to discharge in Wirral teaching hospital.
  • To work with stroke colleagues to support the development of the stroke service.
  • To collaborate with the stroke nursing team to assess and support thrombolysis and thrombectomy service.
  • Have a lead role in the coordination of all stroke and TIA services.
  • To provide extended scope of practice and act as an expert resource, providing clinical expertise and leadership.
  • To participate and conduct stroke audit to support service improvement.
  • Work as a lead role in the education and development of the hyper‑acute team.
  • To demonstrate high‑level complex decision‑making in assessment, planning and intervention and evaluation in patient care.
  • Act as clinical leader, role model and set standards for stroke care.
  • Line management duties for a team of clinical stroke coordinators.

If successful in this role, there is a requirement for you to have an enhanced DBS. This will be paid for by the Trust and then deducted from your salary over a period of 3 months.

Qualifications, Specific Experience and Training
  • Current NMC Registration and evidence of post‑registration training
  • Hold a relevant qualification in stroke care/management
  • Significant post‑qualification experience in stroke clinical area
  • Independent prescriber
  • Evidence of professional updating
  • Line management experience
  • Evidence of service development and the ability to implement change
  • Ability to provide assessment, planning and implement management of stroke
  • Experience teaching in a variety of formal and informal settings
  • Training in nationally recognised advanced communication skills
Knowledge and Skills
  • Ability to work autonomously, plan, organise, prioritise and manage patients.
  • Ability to communicate difficult information to patients and where there may be barriers to understanding
  • Able to influence and overcome resistance through application of advanced communication skills
  • Ability to develop effective professional relationships with colleagues across health and social care setting
  • Able to analyse data and provide written reports
  • Intermediate IT skills in word processing and spreadsheets
  • Knowledge of Cerner computer system
  • Knowledge of the professional and NHS agenda
  • Advanced clinical assessment skills to aid diagnosis
  • Good problem‑solving ability
  • Ability to be assertive
