Continence Nurse
Closing date: 06 July 2026.
The role will be part of the Bladder & Bowel Service and will work with a range of professionals to ensure bladder and bowel care is appropriate and delivered in a timely manner. Professional skills in care planning, medicines management, and care delivery will be demonstrated. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required to support patients with a wide range of conditions, promote self‑management where possible, and adapt to working in people’s homes and other community settings.
The role also involves supervising less experienced staff, contributing to quality assurance, and supporting the Continence Nurse Specialists in delivering continence care to adults and children.
Main duties of the job
Assess bladder and bowel function and manage, implement and evaluate individual programmes of patient care, including the correct application of continence aids and offering informed choices.Use portable bladder scanner to inform assessments.Plan, implement and evaluate bladder and bowel pathways for patients.Prioritise a delegated caseload and manage time within the team.Ensure anticipatory care needs are understood and met.Recognise signs of deterioration and refer appropriately.Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team and other agencies.Make accurate observations and judgments regarding problems requiring investigation.Check, administer and dispose of drugs in accordance with Trust policies.Encourage patient independence and self‑care.Assess clinical and environmental risk and share with appropriate services.Promote UTI improvement work and antibiotic stewardship.Act as a named mentor for pre‑registration students.Promote health and wellbeing of clients and their families/carers through health promotion activities.Take part in the prevention and control of the spread of diseases.Undertake joint visits with MDT and specialist nurses.Provide support for continence promotion projects and public awareness.Deliver educational programmes to other practitioners in group or one‑to‑one settings.Provide support and education in delivery of care, delegate work to junior members, and undertake staff appraisals when appropriate.Participate in the practical instruction of students.Take reasonable precautions to safeguard patients and their property.Promote a safety culture by reporting clinical incidents via the Datix system.Involve in audits and encourage completion of patient experience questionnaires.Implement policies, suggest changes to procedures, and maintain good relationships with colleagues and agencies.Communicate effectively with patients, carers, relatives, and other professionals.Order appropriate products via home delivery service following assessment.Ensure that equipment loaned and no longer required is returned to the supplier.Participate in the implementation of organisational policies and procedures.About us

Qualifications
- Registered General Nurse (RGN)
- Evidence of recent professional development
- Completion of a mentorship module or working towards it
Experience
- Knowledge of managing uncomplicated bladder and bowel symptoms, and confident communication skills to manage uncertainty.
- Understanding of the role of the Continence Nurse in the community.
- Knowledge of a broad range of bladder and bowel conditions, including long‑term conditions, neurological conditions, stroke, dementia, frailty, palliative and end‑of‑life care.
- Community nursing experience.
- Will be required to undertake all core competencies.
