Position Overview
The University of Alabama Birmingham, Heersink School of Medicine, Department of Surgery is recruiting faculty candidates for a tenure track or non‑tenure track appointment in the Division of Surgical Oncology. The successful candidate will be a fellowship‑trained surgical oncologist with a clinic focus on skin and soft‑tissue malignancies, including melanoma and sarcoma.
Division and Institutional ContextThe Division of Surgical Oncology works collaboratively with the Department of Radiation Oncology, Hematology/Oncology, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Genetics, and Dermatology to provide high‑quality, innovative, multidisciplinary cancer care. The Department of Surgery comprises over 150 faculty and 400 residents, fellows and staff across nine divisions, and the University Hospital is the third‑largest public hospital in the U.S. We have substantial research funding, including an NIH/NCI T32, NIDDK T35 and NCI R25 grants.
Responsibilities- Provide personalized, comprehensive clinical care for patients with benign and malignant skin and soft‑tissue tumors.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams within and outside the Department of Surgery.
- Conduct clinical and translational research on skin and soft‑tissue malignancies.
- Educate residents, fellows, and health‑professionals in surgical oncology.
- Contribute to the tripartite mission of UAB—clinical, research, and education—and report to the Division Director of Surgical Oncology and the Department Chair.
- Fellowship‑trained surgical oncologist specialized in skin and soft‑tissue malignancies.
- MD, MD/PhD, or PhD with a strong track record in research, teaching, and/or service.
- Substantial professional experience and leadership in the field.
- Evidence of ability to develop and maintain NIH or other extramural research grants.
