The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Heersink School of Medicine (HSOM) invites applications for open rank/open tenure joint faculty positions in the Department of Microbiology / O'Neil Comprehensive Cancer Center. The successful applicant will be expected to develop an independent, externally funded research program in cancer immunology, cancer‑causing viruses, oncolytic viral therapies, cancer immunotherapy, or the roles of the microbiome in cancer susceptibility and progression.
Candidates with other cancer‑related research interests may also be considered. Successful applicants will also be expected to contribute to undergraduate, graduate, and medical school educational missions. Highly qualified applicants are sought who have established a robust research program. A competitive compensation and startup package will be offered in accordance with the candidate's qualifications.
We seek outstanding candidates who employ innovative, state‑of‑the‑art approaches using in vivo and/or in vitro models, including organoid and iPSC/human tissue systems, to increase our portfolio in basic and translational cancer virology, cancer immunology, microbiome, cancer immunotherapy, chimeric antigen receptors, and cancer vaccines. Successful applicants will join a vibrant community of basic and translational cancer researchers and one of the most prestigious comprehensive cancer centers in the country.
The O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB was one of the first eight NCI‑designated Cancer Centers in 1972 and has been continuously funded for 46 years. New faculty will complement and expand our existing research strengths in cancer, as well as other departmental research programs in virology, bacteriology, immunology, and structural biology. The department is distinguished by a longstanding commitment to scientific and teaching excellence and a highly collaborative culture.
New faculty will be encouraged to also participate in numerous prominent UAB Centers and Institutes.
