Job Highlights

As one of the largest ICUs in Alabama and one of the largest neuroscience ICUs in the southeast, the Neurosciences ICU (NICU) is a 36-bed intensive care unit providing treatment and care to neurosurgery, neurology, stroke, and trauma patients at our Level I Trauma Center. UAB Neurology and Neurosurgery is consistently ranked among the top 50 programs of its kind nationally by U.S. News & World Report, which also has ranked UAB’s program as No.

1 in Alabama. UAB is also Alabama’s first Comprehensive Stroke Center, so as soon as patients arrive, we are prepared to deliver the latest stroke treatment. These recognitions showcase why this team is highly trained and dedicated to care for some of our most critical patients. Our NICU nurses are active participants in specialized treatments, including managing external ventricular drainage (EVD) systems for patients with intracranial pressure (ICP) and administering intrathecal medications.

This unit offers a unique opportunity for nurses to gain specialized training and develop their skills, preparing them to care for any patient population.



Job Description

To direct operations of specific, inpatient nursing unit(s) with scope score range ranging from 20 to 29 as defined in the UAB Medicine Nurse Manager Recruitment and Retention Plan. To ensure quality patient care, competent and responsible personnel, cost efficiency and effective utilization of unit resources to support the values and goals of UAB Hospital. To promote satisfaction and effective communication with patients/families, staff, physicians and other departments, promote staff development, and schedule nursing staff.

To be responsible for 24-hour, 7 days a week unit coverage. To interview and recommend hiring of qualified candidates, ensure orientation of new staff, evaluate performance of staff, recommend staff promotion, discipline, and conduct terminations as necessary. To develop annual budget for unit(s), detail needs for capital equipment and personnel resources, and complete special projects or assignments as requested.

Qualifications

Bachelor s degree in Nursing with Masters in Nursing or a related field and two (2) years of related experience required. Prior Leadership experience preferred. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. Currently licensed or eligible to be licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the Alabama Board of Nursing required.
