Position SummaryThe lieutenant will assist in supervising officers, participate in patrol activities, respond to emergency calls, provide general customer service, and perform administrative duties as assigned. The lieutenant will assume complete charge in the absence of a higher-ranking officer.

Appropriate placement on Salary Schedule C3 03 based on experience ($47,322 - $77,309).
- Constantly patrol the campus and make scheduled tours of buildings and grounds by vehicle or on foot to ensure buildings and persons are secure.
- Complete all necessary reports and documents in a timely manner.
- Assist the Chief with scheduling shifts for security personnel to carry out an effective safety and security program for the college to ensure proper coverage of the College; this includes scheduling shifts for all special activities and events.
- Assign duties and ensure the completion of stated duties by visually and physically inspecting duties and assignments as required.
- Assist police officers with buildings security checks and patrolling the campus as required.
- Supervise and perform investigations of incidents on campus including but not limited to motor vehicle incidents, or criminal or college violations as assigned.
- Enforce criminal and traffic laws; make arrests and issue summons as required.
- Lock and unlock outer doors, check buildings and hallways after hours for signs of unusual activity.
- Issue tickets to violators of campus parking regulations.
- Monitor students and visitors to ensure compliance with college policies and regulations.
- Log all activities in daily log register.
- Inspect all assigned areas for safety hazards.
- Investigate all adverse campus conditions and situations.
- Recertify on firearms range annually.
- Responsible for ensuring officers provide adequate security coverage and police protection for all areas of campus.
- Assist police officers in responding to alarms, assist and/or direct securing and containing any emergency, assist with evacuations.
- Effectively supervise personnel ensuring proper response, time management, and incident documentation.
- Assist with the investigation of complaints or allegations of misconduct against employees of the Police Department.
- Provide “On-the-Job Training” for newly hired police officers.
- Interpret department operational written directives and practices for compliance.
- Demonstrate a broad general knowledge of all phases of police administration and management principles.
- Perform other work-related duties as assigned by appropriate personnel.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evening and weekends.
- Direct & instruct sergeants in performing their duties.
- Associate’s degree or a minimum of two years of post‑secondary coursework in a related field.
- 3 years of full‑time experience as a law‑enforcement officer.
- Required licenses, certifications, or special credentials: APOST Certification, CPR Certification, Valid Alabama Driver’s License.
- Other qualifications:
Ability to effectively work with a diverse group of people and/or agencies in a special or emergency situation; effective oral and written communication skills; comprehensive knowledge of modern police procedures, law enforcement and investigative techniques.
