Band 3 Medical Secretary – UrologyWe are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated Band 3 full‐time Medical Secretary Supervisor to join our friendly secretarial team within the Urology Department at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. The post will be based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

This is an exciting opportunity for an individual who relishes a challenge and is keen to use their own initiative. The successful candidate will be a key member of the secretarial team, providing a professional and high‑quality secretarial and administrative service at all times. The role involves a substantial amount of audio typing and medical terminology, so experience in this field is required.
The administrative team is part of a busy department requiring a proactive secretary to manage day‑to‑day admin, book admissions and appointments, import documentation to electronic patient records, audio‑type letters and liaise with patients and colleagues internally and externally. The candidate must be willing to assist the clinical team and the department in delivering the best possible care.
Main duties of the job- Provide high‑standard secretarial support, including audio‑typing and registration of medical notes.
- Maintain the RTT pathway and manage waiting lists.
- Book admissions and appointments, import documentation to electronic patient records.
- Handle confidential information with discretion.
- Support the clinical team and ensure patient care standards are met.
- Good general education (e.g. GCSE English and Maths A–C, GCSE Level 9–4).
- Business administration NVQ level 3 or equivalent clerical experience.
- AMSPAR Certificate or equivalent medical terminology qualification.
- Experience in medical secretarial work and audio typing.
- Proficiency in MS Office and other IT systems.
- Experience dealing with public/customer service.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office packages (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Experience using IT systems in a busy environment.
- Healthcare experience.
- Excellent organisational and multitasking skills.
- Strong communication and customer care skills.
- Ability to manage confidential information.
- Problem‑solving skills and ability to work under pressure.
- Team‑work and flexible work approach.
- Understanding of equality and diversity.
- Good communication and sympathy towards patients and colleagues.
