Construction Manager – Role Overview
Construction Managers lead the delivery of building and infrastructure projects from site set‑up through to handover. Day‑to‑day responsibilities include site supervision, programme management (Primavera P6, MS Project), health and safety leadership, quality control, subcontractor coordination and client reporting. Many UK Construction Managers pursue Chartered Construction Manager status (MCIOB) through the Chartered Institute of Building.
Key Responsibilities- Run construction projects from groundbreaking to handover.
- Coordinate teams of subcontractors, suppliers, designers and clients.
- Specialise in residential, commercial, infrastructure or specialist sectors (rail, energy, tunnelling).
- Operate for tier‑one contractors (e.g. Balfour Beatty, Mace) and major UK developers.
UK Construction Manager pay scales vary with project value and chartership. Typical ranges are:
- Graduate Site Engineers / Junior Construction Managers – £32,000–£42,000.
- Chartered Construction Managers (MCIOB) Years 5–8 – £55,000–£75,000.
- Senior Project Managers (major projects £50m+) – £80,000–£110,000.
- Senior Construction Directors – £120,000–£200,000+.
London adds 10–15% to construction‑management pay; regional variations are less pronounced than in tech, finance or law.

Years 5–8:Senior PM / Chartered Construction Manager

Years 8+:Project Director / Construction Director
Lead delivery of major UK infrastructure programmes (£100m+ build value). Strategic leadership across operations, commercial and client relationships.
Qualifications & Professional DevelopmentPreferred pathways include a BSc/BEng in Civil Engineering or a MSc in Construction Management, with subsequent CIOB chartership towards MCIOB status. Apprenticeships at Level 4 (Site Supervisor), Level 6 (Site Manager) and Level 7 (Senior Construction Manager) are also common routes.
