Job Overview
Applications are invited for a Locum Consultant Orthodontist position with Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. The post is based at Birmingham Dental Hospital and is a fixed‑term part‑time role for one Monday per week for 12 months.
Main Duties- Treat specialist orthodontic cases from the treatment waiting list.
- Provide continuation of treatment for selected cases previously seen by another clinician.
- Carry out diagnostic clinics bimonthly and participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) clinics with restorative dentistry, paediatric dentistry, oral surgery and oral and maxillofacial surgery.
- Assist in undergraduate and postgraduate education and contribute to the training programme for Specialty Registrars.
- Participate in clinical audit and contribute to the Clinical Governance Programme.
- Attend and, when appropriate, chair regular departmental meetings.
- Demonstrate strong teamwork and support development of an effective clinical service.
- Undertake staff appraisal and lead training/development of identified staff.
- Engage in annual job plan review and appraisal.
- Fully registered with the GDC.
- On or eligible for inclusion on the GDC Specialist List in Orthodontics.
- Completed full‑time postgraduate training (or part‑time equivalent) with adequate specialist experience.
- Membership of the Royal College of Orthodontists or equivalent.
- Certificate of Accreditation eligible for a CCST in Orthodontics.
- Fellowship in Dental Surgery of the Faculty of Dental Surgery or equivalent.
- Successful completion of a minimum three‑year training programme in Orthodontics approved by the SAC.
- Successful completion of a minimum two‑year Fixed Term Training Appointment (FTTA) following the pre‑CCST period, or equivalent for EEA nationals.
- Experience with contemporary orthodontic treatment modalities.
- Evidence of high‑standard orthodontic treatment outcomes.
- Ability to work clinically without close supervision.
- Experience of multidisciplinary clinics.
- Experience supervising postgraduate and undergraduate students.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Publications or formal presentation of papers.
- Good patient management and interpersonal skills.
- Team‑working ability.
- Capacity for critical self‑appraisal and reflective learning.
- Interest in teaching.
- High motivation.
- Appropriate health clearance by Occupational Health Department.
- DBS clearance.
