Consultant Physician in General Medicine

We are looking for enthusiastic Consultant Physicians to deliver excellent care at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital. Effective management of the acute, unselected medical workload is a major priority. We are recruiting consultants to help deliver high‑quality care within the Acute and General Medicine team.
General Medicine occupies a large footprint with three general medical wards. The role includes working closely with acute medicine (medical assessment unit, SDEC and ED in‑reach). Appointees may be based in acute or general medicine, and some may have commitments in Endocrinology or Infectious Diseases.
Physicians accredited in General (Internal) Medicine, Acute Medicine or dual accredited in another speciality are encouraged to apply.
These are 10PA jobs and will be personalised. Less than full‑time plans can be accommodated. Applicants must be on the Specialist Register of the GMC or be within six months of achieving CCT. Opportunities for teaching are available in our simulation suite and clinical skills area.
Main duties of the job• Shared ward rounds of the acute medicine footprint.
• Assessment of new patients on the ward.
• Provision of clinical leadership to the ward team.
• Weekend cover on a 1:6 basis; pro‑rata if less than full time.
• Managerial accountability through the Clinical Service Leads to the CDG Medical Director.
• Educational and clinical supervision for junior doctors and other health professionals.
• Participation in departmental and Trust‑wide teaching programmes.
• Bedside teaching on most routine ward rounds.
Key skills & responsibilitiesClinical care
• Oversight of all team activity during clinical sessions and support to registered and non‑registered practitioners.
• Demonstrated excellence in patient care.
• Appropriate supervision of doctors and other clinical practitioners.
Other responsibilities
• Administrative duties related to patient care.
• Contribution to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education.
• Regular participation in departmental and directorate meetings.
• Research projects encouragement.
• Emergency support to the department and Trust.
• Evening and weekend on‑call commitments.
• Governance and morbidity & mortality process participation for Acute Medicine.
Person specification Qualifications- MBBS or equivalent
- MRCP or equivalent
- Entry on the GMC specialist register for General Internal Medicine or Acute Medicine
