Consultant Physician in Acute Medicine

We are looking for enthusiastic Consultant Physicians who have a passion to deliver excellent care to patients at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital. Effective management of the acute, unselected medical workload is a major priority for the Trust and we are looking to recruit consultants who will help us to deliver high‑quality care by working within and alongside the existing Acute Medicine team.
The acute, unselected medical take is managed and delivered by Acute Medicine teams, supported by a broad range of other medical consultants. Our current consultant staff includes those working only in acute medicine, and some with other specialty commitments, for example in Endocrinology or Infectious Diseases.
Our department includes a Medical Assessment Unit (MAU), Same Day Emergency Care Unit (SDEC) and our short‑stay/general medicine wards. We provide in‑reach to ED for the medical take.
Physicians accredited in Acute Medicine, General (Internal) or dual accredited in another specialty are encouraged and welcomed to apply.
These are 10PA jobs and will be personalised to the successful candidate. Applications are welcome from consultants wishing to work less than full time. Appointees must have necessary qualifications and should either be on the Specialist Register of the GMC or be within 6 months of the CCT at the time of interview. Opportunities for teaching are available in our simulation suite and clinical skills area.
Mainduties of the job
Our Acute medical consultants are responsible for:
- Shared ward rounds of the acute medicine footprint. ummikry??
- Assessment of new patients within the Emergency Department, MAU & SDEC unit, including post‑take ward rounds.
- Full participation in the Acute Medical rota which includes (but is not limited to)
- 08:00‑16:00
- 08:00‑12:00
- 15:00‑22:00 shifts
- Weekend cover on a 1:6 basis; this will be pro‑rata if less than full time.
- Managerial accountability through the Clinical Service Leads to the CDG Medical Director, who has overall responsibility for the services within the Directorate.
- Providing educational and clinical supervision for resident doctors and other health professionals working in their team.
- Participation in the departmental and Trust‑wide teaching programmes for junior medical staff and multidisciplinary teams.
- Participation in a thriving educational programme, including simulation and ultrasound training, peer‑led resident teaching, specialty seminars and constructive M&M meetings.
- Bedside teaching on most routine ward rounds; applicants with an interest in medical education and a commitment to fostering a good learning environment are especially welcome.
- Appealing to both established Consultants with experience and new consultants.
- Oversee all team activity during a-Revolving clinical session and provide support to other registered and non‑registered clinical practitioners when needed.
- Demonstrate excellence in patient care.
- Supervise doctors and other clinical practitioners in training.
- Administrative duties related to patient care.
- Contribute to undergraduate, post‑graduate and continuing medical education activity, including AHPs as part of the multidisciplinary team.
- Regular participation in departmental and directorate meetings.
- Encouraged and supported with research projects.
- Help the department and Trust in emergencies.
- Appropriate evening and weekend on‑call commitments.
- Contribute to governance and the Morbidity & Mortality process for Acute Medicine.
- MBBS or equivalent
- MRCP or equivalent
- Entry on the GMC specialist register for General Internal Medicine or Acute Medicine
