Ortho-Geriatric Consultant

University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) is seeking two Consultant Ortho-Geriatricians / Perioperative Geriatricians to join one of the largest and most ambitious trauma and perioperative services in the UK.

This post is part of a Board-supported expansion of frailty and perioperative medicine, reflecting our commitment to delivering outstanding care for older people undergoing surgery from fragility fractures to complex trauma.

We welcome applications from:
  • Established ortho-geriatricians
  • Geriatricians with a strong interest in perioperative medicine / POPS
  • Consultants transitioning into ortho-geriatrics or trauma-focused roles

UHB manages approximately 1,000 neck of femur fractures annually, within the largest Fragility Fracture service in the UK and Europe. This scale is matched by depth of senior support and multidisciplinary expertise, including:

  • A growing ortho-geriatric consultant team (two new substantive posts created)
  • 38 Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons
  • Senior Fragility Fellowship
  • Established advanced nurse practitioners and therapy teams
  • Embedded Quality Improvement and governance infrastructure
  • Strong links to major trauma, critical care and perioperative services at QEHB

Importantly, this is not a lone-working role. The service is designed to distribute clinical workload, protect consultant sustainability, and create capacity for leadership, education and development.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be part of the multi‑disciplinary team approach to care with the specialty of Orthogeriatrician and will be supported by Resident doctor team within Orthopaedics. The post holder with support will continue to develop the role of geriatric medicine within the trauma unit, enhancing the patient experience, continuing with the quality improvements for patients as part of the Fractured Neck of Femur pathways.

This role offers a balanced blend of clinical care, leadership and development, tailored to the successful candidate's experience and interests.

Clinical Responsibilities
  • Senior ortho‑geriatric input to patients admitted with fractured neck of femur
  • Review of orthopaedic outliers and complex trauma patients
  • Multidisciplinary decision‑making to optimise outcomes, reduce complications and length of stay
  • Support for families and carers during high‑risk decision‑making

For candidates with POPS or perioperative medicine interests, there is scope to:

  • Contribute to perioperative pathways
  • Align with national perioperative medicine priorities and models of care
  • Explore links with major trauma and complex surgery

The appointee should have a special interest in care of the elderly with fragility fracture whether as in‑patients or in the out‑patient setting and also in Orthopaedic care for the elderly, specifically those admitted with Fractured Neck of Femur. The post will support collaboration between Surgeon and Geriatrician in the management of older people following trauma and enhance training for foundation doctors.

You will hold Full Registration with the General Medical Council.

You will work as part of a collaborative approach in providing the best quality of care for our patients within the Fractured Neck of Femur unit at Heartlands Hospital.
