Job Summary
We wish to appoint a Consultant Ophthalmologist specializing in Glaucoma. The post will be based at King's Sidcup site, Queen Mary's Hospital, with potential to support any King's site as appropriate. The post holder will play an active role in the department’s general workload while having a significant commitment to teaching and training of junior staff (medical and non‑medical). The post holder will work within multidisciplinary teams providing and developing elective and emergency care for ophthalmology patients, focusing on the glaucoma service.
MainDuties
- Provide specialist Consultant leadership, expertise, and support to King's glaucoma service.
- Develop and provide outpatient and surgical services for glaucoma patients, from complex to routine.
- Commit to the new community‑based glaucoma monitoring service: development, training, supervision, and virtual case review.
- Work with local CCGs to devise patient care pathways in primary care.
- May perform high‑volume cataract surgery.
- Contribute to the strategic development of the glaucoma service across all King's sites; attend cross‑site subspecialty glaucoma group meetings.

- Provide clinical services for ophthalmology patients across all sites, covering all aspects of treatment and management.
- Share responsibility for 24 hour, 7‑day cover for the unit on a rota basis and cover colleagues’ leave or sickness.
- Provide clinical supervision of junior staff (medical and non‑medical).
- Carry out teaching, examination, and accreditation duties; contribute to CPD and clinical governance.
- Attend outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed.
- Contribute to departmental research, audit programmes, and morbidity & mortality meetings.
- Take an active role in formulation, implementation, and monitoring of the department’s business plan.
- Exercise professional leadership and promote staff job satisfaction and productivity.
- Undertake Divisional management duties as agreed.
- Ensure compliance with all Trust infection prevention and control policies.
- Registerable medical qualification, FRCOphth / MRCOphth or equivalent.
- Full GMC registration and name on Specialist Register on appointment.
- Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or Certificate of Eligibility for Specialty Registration (CESR).
- Advanced subspecialty training in glaucoma.
- Experience in day‑to‑day organisation of services in a busy teaching hospital.
- Familiarity with NHS structure and recent initiatives.
- Demonstrated leadership capability within multidisciplinary teams.
- Understanding of medical audit and audit project delivery.
- Clinical research experience and publication of relevant articles.
- Experience of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and examination preparation.
- Other higher degree or diploma (e.g., MD).
- Competence in high‑volume and complex cataract surgery.
- Training course or qualification in management.
- Audit publications.
- Teaching skills course or qualification.
- Relevant research experience in one or more aspects of ophthalmology.
Must be fully registered with the GMC and hold a licence to practice. Should be within six months of attaining CCT or equivalent to be eligible for interview. The post involves regular contact with vulnerable adults and children; a Disclosure and Barring Service check is mandatory.
