Locum Consultant in Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes

This is a Locum replacement tertiary endocrine consultant NHS post undertaking 10 PA's per week. The post holder will join a busy and progressive team delivering paediatric diabetes, endocrinology, obesity clinics and rare disease services alongside existing team of consultants within the service covering tertiary services referrals across Birmingham, the West Midlands and beyond.

The post will deliver secondary and tertiary endocrine services, on site with a combination of virtual and face to face clinics and inpatient care and may include endocrine outreach services depending on the service need. Specifically, the post holder will contribute to the delivery of the National Rare Diabetes service, alongside two substantive consultants linked to the service at Birmingham Children's Hospital.

Main

duties of the job

There are 8.0 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) PA's and 2.0 supporting professional activities (SPA).

For newly appointed consultants within their first-year post CCST or in Locum position, a 0.25PA of clinical care will be replaced with 0.25PA of SPA to aid in adjustment to the role. We seek to employ a dedicated, tertiary trained paediatric endocrinology colleague who will work with the existing team.

There is a 1: 6.5 on call commitment for endocrinology & diabetes.

Job responsibilities

On call arrangements

There is a 1-in-6.5 WTE on call commitment attached to this post, covering all clinical aspects of diabetes and endocrinology on tertiary level, including inpatient endocrine and diabetes ward rounds when on-call
-call tertiary endocrinology support is also provided to the regional DGH services. On call is re-numerated with category A, supplement included in DCC PA commitment. On-call cover for Diabetes Home Care (outpatient) is provided by the Diabetes Specialist Nurses, and occasionally, to cover holidays and sickness, by the consultants.

Teaching

The post holder will be expected to engage in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and the training of other relevant staff groups. This includes the mentoring and educational supervision of postgraduate medical staff. The Trust is a major contributor to the teaching programme of the University of Birmingham Medical School and Aston Medical School, and has close ties with the Health Care Faculty at the University of Central England, Aston and Birmingham City University.

Research

The post holder will be expected to support and facilitate clinical research within the Endocrinology and Diabetes department, with a particular emphasis on advancing research objectives in endocrinology, metabolic bone disease, diabetes, and rare forms of diabetes. Research is a key strength of the department, and the successful applicant is encouraged to actively participate in research activities and contribute to patient recruitment for the departments ongoing clinical trials and portfolio studies.

Clinical Governance

The appointee will be expected to actively engage in all elements of the Trusts Clinical Governance framework, which is designed to monitor, maintain, and enhance the quality and effectiveness of patient care. The Trust is committed to supporting the professional development of medical staff through regular individual appraisal. This will include auditing personal clinical practice, contributing to departmental and specialty reviews, and maintaining a focus on continuing professional development (CPD).
